An armed man drove a car through a fence into Hamburg airport on Saturday night and fired two shots into the air. Police said no one appeared to be injured, but the airport said it was currently closed, halting all takeoffs and landings.

Police said the incident happened at around 8pm local time on Saturday. They added that after the shooting, the man threw two burning bottles of alcohol out of the car. A police spokesman said there was a child in the car.

Police added that they were conducting a major operation and were simulating a “hostage situation”. An airport spokesman said 27 flights had been affected.

Meanwhile, in France, police are hunting a man who stabbed and injured a Jewish woman in the city of Lyon on Saturday, while a swastika was found graffitied at her home.

Lyon Mayor Gregory Doucet said on social media: "Such an act of violence is unthinkable. I offer all my support to the victim and her relatives."

A national police spokesman did not give further details about the suspect and said he could not confirm whether the attack could be treated as an anti-Semitic hate crime.

Police in countries around the world have reported a rise in anti-Semitic and anti-Muslim crimes after the Israeli-Palestinian conflict erupted and has been raging since October 7.
