For a long time, people in Phu Gia 1 village have been making sugar from sugarcane grown in the area. The production process of raw sugarcane products is mainly done by traditional manual methods. Sugar cane (some places call it brown sugar or raw cane sugar, brown sugar) is a type of primitive sugar.
People use sugarcane as raw material, squeeze to get the juice, settle, filter, cook into molasses and then continue cooking until the sugar crystallization stage is reached, then stop, scoop into ceramic bowls or trays to dry, then separate the sugar. With Phu Gia sugar, the sugar is in the form of a card, square, convenient, easy to use, and easier to preserve than sugar bowls.
The whole Phu Gia village used to have up to a dozen households making sugar, but now only Ms. Hoang Thi Tuong's sugar mill and a newly formed sugar mill remain. Ms. Hoang Thi Tuong's Phu Gia sugar product has been recognized as a 3-star OCOP product in 2023.
Ms. Tuong’s facility has long been contracted by a company to purchase 6 tons of sugar per year. Each kilo of sugar is purchased by the company for 60,000 VND. Compared to granulated sugar, sugar is more attractive, easier to transport, easier to consume, and has better market competitiveness.
Ms. Tuong's sugarcane raw material area is 3 - 4 hectares wide. She said that she not only uses the amount of sugarcane grown by her family, but also buys more sugarcane from local people to produce sugar cubes. Every year, her family's sugar mill is contracted by the company to consume 6 tons, the remaining sugar is mainly sold to local people in Nong Son.
“There are many sources of sugarcane. My family is capable of producing 10 tons of sugar per year. Of which, 6 tons are produced according to the company's requirements, the rest we produce ourselves and sell on the spot,” Ms. Tuong shared.
In recent years, the People's Committee of Ninh Phuoc commune has continued to provide seedlings to support people in growing sugarcane. Mr. Truong Van Nhanh (a land and construction officer in charge of new rural areas in Ninh Phuoc commune) said that the locality has 3 OCOP products recognized as 3 stars: Phu Gia sugar, agarwood pens and brown rice.
From the National Target Program on New Rural Development, Ninh Phuoc commune has supported high-yield sugarcane varieties imported from Binh Dinh and Phu Yen for people to plant. In 2022, people will be provided with varieties to plant on an area of 3 hectares; in 2023, the commune will continue to provide varieties for people to plant an additional 2.5 hectares.
“Every year, people only harvest one crop of sugarcane, mainly providing raw materials for the local sugar mill owners. Phu Gia sugar products meet 3-star OCOP standards, contributing to maintaining and developing local specialty products,” said Mr. Nhanh.
