FDA proposes to focus on developing vaccines to deal with XBB variant

The recommendation was supported by a 21-member advisory panel, and the panel’s discussion suggests the FDA is likely to focus on the XBB.1.5 subvariant. Vaccine makers Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and Novavax are developing vaccines to target XBB.1.5 as well as other subvariants that are spreading.

Preclinical trial data from all three companies were presented to advisory panels. The World Health Organization (WHO) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA) have also recommended that the next round of Covid-19 vaccine boosters should focus on versions of XBB.
