Ford is recalling more than 125,000 sport utility vehicles (SUVs) and trucks in the US due to the risk of engine compartment fires, the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced on its website on June 6.

The recall follows a similar one from a year ago, including Escape and Lincoln SUVs and Maverick pickups built between 2020 and 2023 equipped with 2.5-liter plug-in hybrid engines, according to the announcement.

In the event of an engine failure, fuel and engine oil vapors can be released into the engine compartment and accumulate near ignition sources such as a hot engine or exhaust components, potentially leading to an engine compartment fire, NHTSA said.

The agency recommends that vehicle owners stop and turn off their vehicles if they hear engine noise, notice poor performance or see smoke.

Last week, Ford announced it would recall 142,000 Lincoln MKC SUVs in the US while investigating the cause of fires under the hood.
