3-star OCOP quality hill chicken in Cam Xuyen

Mr. Truong Xuan Ha's household in Cam Minh commune (Cam Xuyen, Ha Tinh ) has made the most of favorable natural conditions to promote the development of 3-star OCOP quality hill chicken farming.

Cam Minh commune is a locality with mountainous terrain, large land area, abundant water resources, suitable for raising livestock and poultry. From these conditions, in 2015, Mr. Truong Xuan Ha (born in 1973, in village 5) started raising chickens, with the brand name of Ngan Ha hill chicken.

During the initial preparation period, Mr. Ha took the trouble to learn and try raising many different chicken breeds. After a period of testing, he decided to choose the straw-yellow chicken breed (grass-fed chicken) to raise. This is a popular domestic chicken breed in Vietnam, with firm, sweet, delicious meat, loved by many people.

Mr. Ha has also linked up with 17 other households in the village to establish a chicken farming cooperative. His family alone has more than 1,000 ^{square meters} for farming.

Mr. Ha said: “To have high quality products, I carefully select chickens from native breeds. During the breeding process, my family and associated breeding households all adhere to the semi-free-range breeding process and strictly implement regulations on barns, care techniques, and full disease prevention.”

The Milky Way hill chicken is a straw-yellow breed of chicken, raised on hillsides.

Unlike chickens raised on farms, Ngân Hà hill chickens are raised naturally on large hills with shade from trees; fed natural foods such as rice bran, corn... Thanks to that, Ngân Hà hill chickens have a characteristic toughness and aroma.

However, the Ngân Hà hill chicken brand was not known to many customers at first, leading to unstable output. Determined to promote his dedicated product widely and bring it closer to consumers in other localities, in early 2023, Mr. Ha boldly invested in machinery, barns... to participate in the OCOP program.

The slaughter area is built to ensure proper clean chicken production process.

In addition, Mr. Ha and the cooperative members have increased the number of livestock to about 4,000 - 5,000 animals/batch. To increase the value of the products and ensure food safety and hygiene, Mr. Ha built a slaughterhouse and purchased equipment such as feather plucking machines, vacuum sealers, and storage cabinets...

Mr. Ha shared: "Currently, the Ngan Ha hill chicken brand has labels, traceability, food safety facility certification, VietGAP certification... These are necessary conditions for product development, creating opportunities for Ngan Ha hill chicken to access and expand the market."

Currently, Ngân Hà hill chicken has been recognized as meeting 3-star OCOP standards, thanks to which, instead of only being consumed locally, the product is now sold at OCOP stores and clean food stores in the province. Each month, the facility sells about 400 - 500 chickens. After being slaughtered and vacuum-packed, the chicken weighs from 1.3 to 1.5 kg with a selling price of 220,000 VND/kg.

As a livestock farmer associated with Mr. Truong Xuan Ha's facility, Ms. Le Thi Lan (village 5) said: "Previously, I and many other households in the village only raised a few dozen chickens each batch for family food or to sell at the local market, so the income was not worth much.

But since joining the chicken farming association with Mr. Ha, we are confident in increasing our herd because the facility guarantees the products. Seeing the Ngan Ha hill chicken products reach consumers near and far, we are very happy."

Mr. Truong Xuan Ha hopes that the product will expand its market further.

Sharing about the development orientation in the coming time, Mr. Truong Xuan Ha shared: “To ensure the supply of clean and safe chicken to consumers, we will continue to expand the scale, recruit new members to increase the number of chicken flocks. Implement well the process, techniques of raising and preventing diseases for chickens to maintain the brand of Ngan Ha OCOP 3-star hill chicken. At the same time, continue to promote and bring products to restaurants, hotels, clean food establishments... in and outside the province”.

Cam Minh is a locality with advantages in chicken farming. Therefore, the fact that Ngân Hà hill chicken product achieved 3-star OCOP not only helps the locality improve the criteria for new rural construction, but also opens up the potential for sustainable chicken farming development in the area.
