The Ministry of Education and Training has just announced the score distribution of the high school graduation exam. Pursuant to Article 45 of the High School Graduation Exam Regulations issued together with Circular 24/2024/TT-BGDDT, the failing score for the 2025 high school graduation exam is determined to be 1 point or less.
Thus, candidates whose test scores are 1 point or lower will fail the high school graduation exam.
According to published data, the total number of failing exams nationwide reached 936, spread across 8/12 subjects. This number increased significantly compared to 585 exams in 2024.
In particular, math became a "hot spot" when it recorded a record high number of failing scores with 777 papers, more than 10 times higher than in 2024 (76 failing papers) and more than 6 times higher than in 2023 (123 failing papers).

On the contrary, at the high score level, math also had 513 candidates scoring 10 points, while last year no student achieved this level.
Digging deeper into the data, while math saw a dramatic increase, other subjects showed positive signs. Natural sciences saw a decrease in failing scores, such as physics (from 56 to 3), chemistry (from 24 to 8) and biology (from 56 to 1).
Similarly, social science subjects also significantly reduced the number of failing scores such as history (from 33 to 13), geography (from 94 to 19). Notably, the subject of civics/ economics and law did not have any failing scores in 2025 (compared to 33 in 2024).
English also recorded a significant decrease from 145 papers in 2024 to 28 papers in 2025.
This year's new subjects are information technology, technology - industry, technology - agriculture, all of which have no failing scores.
Nearly 1,000 exams were scored as failing even though they only tested 4 subjects (2 compulsory subjects: math, literature and 2 subjects chosen from the candidates' strengths).
This is a remarkable number as failing scores will prevent candidates from being eligible to graduate from high school.
