Each 5 kg Monthong durian is purchased by export enterprises for nearly a million VND, equivalent to 178,000-185,000 VND per kg, an increase of 50% compared to the main season.
Having just sold her durian garden to traders near Tet, Ms. Oanh in Tien Giang said that this was the first time she sold a whole garden in buckets (including both large and small sizes) for 140,000 VND per kilogram. "With more than 1 ton of off-season durian, I earned 140 million VND," Ms. Oanh said.
According to Ms. Thanh, a trader in the Western provinces, durian prices have been increasing continuously for the past week. During the day, morning, noon and afternoon, the buying prices are different. Especially with Monthong durian, no matter how much there is, she buys it all at a high price.
"Some days I can buy 1-2 tons, but other days I can't buy any because off-season goods are quite scarce, the number of traders coming to buy has increased 2-3 times compared to last year," said Ms. Thanh.

Records at warehouses of Western enterprises show that the price of Monthong durian type A (weight 2-5 kg) is 178,000-185,000 VND. At this price, each durian weighing 5 kg costs nearly 1 million VND, an increase of 23% compared to December 2023 and an increase of 50% compared to the main crop last year. Similarly, Ri 6 durian type A is from 125,000-135,000 VND per kg.
A representative of Van Hoa Investment and Development Company said that durian prices fluctuate continuously due to high demand in the Chinese market. Large orders but limited supply further push prices up.
"Previously, traders transported goods to the warehouse to sell. Now, if the warehouse wants to fill its container, it has to go to the garden to visit and purchase, but it is still not enough to meet orders," said a representative of this business.
According to Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen, General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, durian is a fruit that is favored by China. In particular, the high demand for gifts during Tet in China makes them very popular. At this time, Thai durian is out of season, so Vietnamese goods are "alone in the market". Meanwhile, the supply of off-season goods is limited. Therefore, durian prices are expected to continue to increase when supply is scarce.
Data from the General Department of Customs shows that in 2023, fruit and vegetable exports will increase mainly due to the increase in durian exports. Last year, total exports of this fruit reached 2.1 billion USD, an increase of 1.82 billion USD compared to 2022. Of which, durian exports to China alone reached 2.03 billion USD, accounting for 99.4% of the total export value of this group of products.
According to data from the General Administration of Customs of China, Vietnam's durian exports to the country increased from nearly zero to 4.63% market share, reaching 188 million USD in 2022 and skyrocketed to 31.82% in the first 11 months of last year.
Durian has become a luxury fruit favored by China’s middle class. They are also often bought as gifts during the Lunar New Year, for couples on engagement or marriage occasions, and for future mothers-in-law.
