Mr. Nguyen Nhu Cuong, Director of the Department of Crop Production ( Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development ), said that this year, 3 enterprises including Ho Quang Tri Private Enterprise (rice varieties ST24, ST25), Loc Troi (varieties Loc Troi 28, Nang Hoa 9) and Thaibinh Seed (A Sao Sticky Rice and TBR39-1) sent rice to the contest.
Second prize this time went to Cambodia, while India won third prize.
Mr. Cuong also said that, unlike previous years, the Organizing Committee did not award a specific type of rice sent from Vietnam, but "honored Vietnamese rice in general". This year's competition had more than 10 countries and 30 rice samples participating.
This is the second time Vietnamese rice has won the world's best rice award at this competition. ST25 rice won first prize for the first time in 2019.
According to Mr. Ho Quang Cua - the father of the ST25 rice variety - after winning the best rice award in 2019, with the 68-10 line, he and his colleagues continued to purify by planting each individual rice plant and by 2021, the 72-6 line was discovered.
There is no outstanding shape because the 72-6 rice plants are short and slightly slanted, but they do not fall over much and flower 5 days earlier than the 68-10 line. The rice grains are about 0.2mm shorter than the old line. This rice line also has a better rice recovery rate than the 68-10 line by about 0.5%.
The World's Best Rice Competition is an annual international event organized by The Rice Trader (USA) for the first time in 2009 with the aim of finding directions and trends for the rice market.
In 2019, at the 11th annual TRT World Rice Conference in the Philippines, for the first time in history, Vietnam won the highest award with its ST25 rice variety. Vietnam also ranked second in the competition held in 2020.
Last year, Cambodia won first prize at the World's Best Rice competition held in Phuket, Thailand. Vietnam, Thailand and Laos were in the top four.
