Coffee price today 5/28/2025: Bouncing back

Domestic coffee prices are currently hovering around VND123,000/kg, but there are very few transactions. The reason is that the price is not attractive enough, so farmers are still holding on to their goods. International importers are also not as keen on purchasing as before. After buying a large amount of coffee in April and the first half of May, they said they had enough supply and were not ready to buy more until the price dropped further.

According to expert Nguyen Quang Binh, coffee exports from Vietnam are also facing difficulties due to many factors. Ports in Northern Europe are congested due to labor shortages and low water levels on the Rhine River, affecting transportation activities. Shipping costs have also increased sharply recently because China has boosted exports after the US postponed imposing a 145% tariff, making it more difficult to book shipping vessels.

Meanwhile, Vietnamese coffee prices are losing their competitiveness. Currently, other countries are offering prices about 200-250 USD/ton lower than Vietnamese coffee. This makes Vietnamese coffee difficult to sell in the international market. Mr. Binh said that the high prices in recent times are partly due to speculation, and in fact, the amount of inventory in intermediaries is still quite large.

In the global market, Brazil is entering its peak harvest season for Conilon robusta coffee in 2025-2026. Thanks to the early harvest, the region is less affected by winter, resulting in an estimated output of around 25.5 million bags. The majority of this output is still used for the domestic market, which consumes up to 18 million bags per year.

However, in recent years, Brazil's robusta coffee exports have also increased sharply. In the 2022-2023 crop year, exports reached 1.47 million bags, while in the 2023-2024 crop year, this figure has skyrocketed to 8.24 million bags.

In the first 10 months of the 2024-2025 crop year, Brazil exported 5.89 million bags, down nearly 10% from the same period last year. This was mainly due to hot and dry weather caused by El Niño, which affected flowering, resulting in a lower Conilon production compared to last year.
