World steel prices
At the end of the trading session on April 24, the price of rebar for May delivery on the Shanghai Stock Exchange increased by 0.07% (2 yuan) to 3,040 yuan/ton. Meanwhile, the price of iron ore for May delivery on the Dalian Stock Exchange decreased by 0.32% (2.5 yuan) to 771 yuan/ton, while the price of ore on the Singapore Stock Exchange decreased by 0.79 USD to 99.45 USD/ton.
Chinese rebar prices have been trading in a narrow range since hitting a seven-month low of 3,017 yuan on April 22 amid ample supplies and uncertain demand.
The Trump administration has signaled that it will not maintain the heavy tariffs it has imposed on China, but both Beijing and Washington have made clear that de-escalation talks have not yet begun, leaving little confidence in a quick end to the tariffs.
As a result, the impact of tariffs on consumer demand in China has increased the downside risk of real estate prices, putting pressure on the balance sheets of real estate developers, reducing a major source of demand for global rebar.
Weakening demand and rising trade protectionism have previously prompted Beijing to signal cuts in steel capacity, but the latest data shows mills are still churning out more steel. China’s crude steel output rose 3.6% year-on-year to 93 million tonnes in March.
In another development, from March 26 to April 18, steel billet prices in China fell by $18/ton to $403/ton (ex-works price in Tangshan). At the same time, the supply of imported iron ore also increased. In March, the volume of goods from Australia's Port Hedland increased by 1.15% compared to the same period last year and increased sharply by 36.73% compared to the previous month - reaching 50.66 million tons.
The Chinese government has been actively supporting the domestic steel industry. The expansion of state support for China’s key consumption sectors was also reflected in the decline in inventories of flat and long steel products in April, including hot-rolled coil and rebar. Inventories fell at traders’ and steel mills’ warehouses. This has stimulated demand but has not affected price trends.
