According to the International Pepper Community (IPC) weekly bulletin, the fourth week of October saw mixed reactions: Only India stood out with gains thanks to a 1% strengthening of the Rupee (87.93 INR/USD), while the US weakened for three consecutive weeks due to currency depreciation and inflationary pressures. Indian domestic and export prices increased for three consecutive weeks, driven by currency factors. In contrast, Indonesia and Sri Lanka were stable after two weeks, while Brazil, Cambodia, China (white pepper) remained unchanged. Malaysia saw declines in most varieties, except for white pepper exports.

The flood of Brazilian pepper in the Indian domestic market – which is priced at around Rs 750 per kg in shops – is disrupting local consumption, especially in Tamil Nadu, Wayanad and Coorg. Brazilian prices are around $6,000 per tonne compared to $8,000 per tonne in India, according to Shamji, creating stiff competition.

Despite the slow purchasing power due to the festive atmosphere, Indian prices have been gradually increasing by 1 Rupee/kg/day, reaching 693 Rupee/kg (ungraded pepper) and 713 Rupee/kg (graded) at Kochi market. The market has been stable thanks to the active purchasing by spice manufacturers. Mr. Kishore Shamji, President of the Indian Pepper and Spice Trade Association, is optimistic due to the expectation of the US reducing import duties, boosting exports.

India’s Ministry of Agriculture has lowered its 2026 production forecast to 85,000 tonnes (from 110,000 tonnes) due to concerns about damage from the northeast monsoon. Indian farmers are facing yield risks, while globally, Brazil’s output is expected to recover to 85,000 tonnes by 2025.
