On the morning of October 11th, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health announced that the Con Dao Special Zone Military-Civilian Medical Center had officially begun performing surgeries as part of the program.

According to the unit, these were planned, non-emergency surgeries, meticulously prepared and performed according to a pre-scheduled plan, to ensure safety, effectiveness, and optimal utilization of medical resources on the island.

During the first phase, doctors rotating from Binh Dan Hospital (Ho Chi Minh City) to work in Con Dao successfully performed two laparoscopic cholecystectomy surgeries on two women.

These are the first laparoscopic surgeries performed as part of a program at the Con Dao Special Zone Military-Civilian Medical Center, marking a new step in expanding high-quality surgical treatment services to the people of this remote island.

The first scheduled surgeries

The first case involved Mrs. LTK (53 years old) who was admitted to the hospital with severe cramping pain in the right lower rib area, with pain occurring after meals. Ultrasound and paraclinical results revealed gallstones in the gallbladder, with the largest measuring approximately 15mm.

Because the patient had a history of open surgery for a ruptured ectopic pregnancy in 2000, the doctors anticipated the possibility of adhesions in the abdominal cavity, which could complicate the surgical procedure. After an online consultation with experts from Binh Dan Hospital, the team unanimously decided to perform laparoscopic cholecystectomy on Ms. K.

The surgical team included Dr. Vu Khuong An (Deputy Head of the Department of Clinical Guidance and Scientific Research, Binh Dan Hospital) as the lead surgeon; Dr. Nguyen Huu Tai (Hung Vuong Hospital), Dr. Le Uy Phuong (Orthopedic and Trauma Hospital), and Dr. Nguyen Thi Thanh Truc (Deputy Head of Anesthesia and Resuscitation Department 1, Binh Dan Hospital).

After more than an hour of surgery, the doctors successfully dissected and exposed the hepatobiliary triangle structure, and safely removed the gallbladder. The patient has a good prognosis and is recovering steadily.

The second case involves Mrs. VTBN (51 years old) with symptoms of persistent cramping and dull pain in the right lower rib area for many years, especially after meals. Examination at the Military and Civilian Medical Center of the Con Dao Special Zone revealed a cluster of gallstones approximately 22mm in size. The patient expressed a desire to undergo laparoscopic surgery locally.

Difficulties arose when Mrs. N. suffered from temporomandibular joint (TMJ) arthritis, limiting her ability to open her mouth and potentially hindering anesthesia. Recognizing this, Dr. Thanh Truc consulted online with experts from Binh Dan Hospital. A complex intubation kit was sent to Con Dao to assist with the surgery.

In addition, the doctors also collaborated in consultations with Dr. Nguyen Hoang Viet Hung (Central Dental and Maxillofacial Hospital of Ho Chi Minh City), who was on rotational duty on the island, helping the anesthesia and surgery process go smoothly.

Both patients experienced a smooth postoperative recovery, their health is stable, and they are expected to be discharged in two days. They will be scheduled for regular follow-up appointments to monitor their recovery progress.

New advancements in Con Dao healthcare.

Representatives from the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health emphasized that the two surgeries performed under the program represent a new step forward for Con Dao's healthcare system, demonstrating not only the readiness to perform emergency surgeries for critical cases but also the proactive scheduling of weekly surgeries for other surgical conditions, including complex ones.

This is no different from how a specialist hospital operates today.

In the near future, doctors from Binh Dan Hospital will assist the Con Dao Special Zone Military-Civilian Medical Center in standardizing anesthesia procedures and preparing for all possible scenarios that may occur during scheduled surgeries, especially for difficult cases.

From there, the quality of anesthesia and resuscitation at local health centers will be gradually improved to meet the same quality standards currently being implemented at Binh Dan Hospital.

The Department of Health acknowledges and highly appreciates the efforts of the doctors in Group 2, who are rotating assignments in Con Dao, for successfully performing laparoscopic cholecystectomy on a patient residing there.

In particular, the Department of Health highly appreciates the remote professional guidance from the leaders and surgical and anesthesia experts of Binh Dan Hospital, which helped standardize surgical and anesthesia procedures for the Con Dao Special Zone Military-Civilian Medical Center.
