The government has just decided to add two expressways to the Road Network Planning for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050.

The Prime Minister has just signed a decision approving the adjustment of the Road Network Planning for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050. This decision amends and supplements some contents of Decision No. 1454 dated September 1, 2021.

Accordingly, the Government has added two expressways to the revised plan: the Ca Mau - Dat Mui expressway and the Quang Ngai - Kon Tum expressway.

Adding these two expressways to the plan is necessary to help develop the socio-economic conditions of the localities.

The Ca Mau - Dat Mui Expressway has a total length of 90km, starting in Ca Mau City, Ca Mau Province, and ending in Ngoc Hien District, also within the province. This expressway is planned to have 4 lanes and is scheduled for completion before 2030.

The Ministry of Transport said that the addition of this expressway aims to leverage the advantages of each socio-economic region, maximize the effectiveness of the North-South economic corridor, and promote the Dat Mui area in Ca Mau, the southernmost point of the country.

Furthermore, Nam Can port plays a crucial role in the port system of the Mekong Delta, having been invested in and built at a strategic location along the Southeast Asian maritime route, and enjoying many favorable conditions for expanding trade with countries in the region such as Singapore, Indonesia, and Malaysia.

On the other hand, Ca Mau Cape is considered a sacred land in the hearts of Vietnamese people, and everyone dreams of visiting it at least once in their lifetime. It boasts a very diverse and rich mangrove forest ecosystem.

Currently, there is no planned highway network to this area; therefore, adding the Ca Mau to Dat Mui route is consistent with the development goals of the National Master Plan for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050, approved by the National Assembly in Resolution No. 81/2023 dated January 9, 2023.

The North-South Expressway project has been planned from Huu Nghi border gate to Ca Mau city, extending from North to South. However, the section from Ca Mau city to Dat Mui has not yet been planned as an expressway. In the past, this section was considered based on the opinions of the Ca Mau Provincial People's Committee and some related agencies, but due to needs and resources, it was not included in the plan.

Ensuring the North-South route is connected by a highway system from Huu Nghi border gate to Dat Mui is essential to guarantee synchronization and promote the socio-economic development of the country.

For the Quang Ngai - Kon Tum expressway, the new plan specifies a scale of 4 lanes with a total length of 136km. The starting point is at the Eastern North-South Expressway in Duc Pho district, Quang Ngai province. The end point is at the Western North-South Expressway in Kon Tum city, Kon Tum province. Regarding the timeline, the Government has determined that this expressway will be invested in before 2030.

The Ministry of Transport stated that the addition of the new route is consistent with the development goals of the National Master Plan for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050, which was approved by the National Assembly in Resolution No. 81/2023 dated January 9, 2023.

The projected traffic volume is approximately 24,030 PCU/day by 2030 and 41,342 PCU/day by 2050. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a high-speed road in the period up to 2030 and plan for 4 lanes to ensure future transportation needs are met when urban and tourism development areas along the route are established.

Furthermore, according to the road network plan for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050, approved by the Prime Minister in Decision No. 1454, the area has two East-West expressways: Quang Nam - Quang Ngai and Quy Nhon - Pleiku - Le Thanh, with a distance of approximately 50-100km.

"The southern area of Quang Ngai connecting to Kon Tum mainly passes through National Highway 24, which is small in scale and has low technical standards, failing to meet the connectivity requirements for developing the potential land resources in the border area between the two provinces, including the Mang Den area. Therefore, considering investment in an expressway connecting in this direction is necessary," the Ministry of Transport said.
