All kinds of sales on airplanes.
According to Tuoi Tre Online , airlines are implementing various in-flight sales programs to increase revenue. Some airlines sell clothing, thermos flasks, ceremonial offerings, and even sell preferred seats when passengers check in online...
Each place sells different kinds of merchandise. In May 2025, Bamboo Airways began to ramp up sales of branded souvenir products.
The newest addition is a 500ml insulated water bottle, priced at 300,000 VND, which is being distributed in waiting areas, ticket offices, and onboard.
Along with instant noodles, teddy bears, and bread, Vietjet Airlines continued to expand its "in-flight commercial offerings" such as ceremonial offerings on flights to Con Dao. However, after a short period of implementation, according to Vietjet's website in May 2025, the airline temporarily suspended sales, citing the reason as reviewing the quality of its supplier partners.
The "Four Blessings" offering set once attracted attention with its price ranging from 450,000 to 6 million VND, including checkered scarves, lotus flowers, fruits, prayer scrolls, and even roasted pig and cosmetics.
The decision to stop selling ceremonial sets comes as Vietjet recently launched flights between Hanoi , Ho Chi Minh City, and Con Dao on April 19th.
Not only budget airlines, but traditional airlines are also accelerating the sale of ancillary goods. Vietnam Airlines also engages in seasonal sales such as mooncakes and specialty fruits to optimize revenue on each flight route.
Another significant source of revenue comes from seat selection services. From February 2025, Vietnam Airlines will officially stop allowing free seat selection during online check-in.
Passengers wishing to sit by the window or near the aisle will need to pay an additional fee of 40,000 VND per domestic flight per passenger or 5 USD per international flight per passenger.
Without prior registration, the system will assign seats randomly. This can be seen as a significant change for customers who are used to pre-selecting their seats when checking in online.
Previously, passengers could flexibly choose their seats for free during online check-in, but with the new policy, if they want their preferred seat, they need to pay a reservation fee or wait at the check-in counter to change seats, depending on seat availability.
Meanwhile, Pacific Airlines, a member of the Vietnam Airlines Group, has just announced adjustments to its carry-on baggage allowance standards effective from May 5th.
Economy class passengers are only allowed a maximum of 10kg (including 1 piece of luggage and 1 personal accessory), while flights operated by ATR are limited to 7kg, in order to standardize service and optimize payload.
On average, bubble tea earns 20 billion VND per year.
Vietnam Airlines currently earns an average of 20 billion VND per year just from selling... bubble tea on its flights.
According to aviation experts, in-flight sales, ranging from bubble tea and souvenirs to seat selection services, are becoming a "gold mine" in airlines' growth strategies.
As profit margins from airline tickets shrink, non-traditional revenue streams not only help increase sales but also improve the passenger experience.
Implementation should be tailored to actual needs, avoiding abuse or imposition that could offend customers.
