Mr. Le Cong Tam's family in Lien Ha 6 village is one of the typical households in the commune in winter crop production. For many years, he has maintained the model of intercropping, intercropping cucumbers, mustard greens, squash and sweet corn. The cucumber beds are neatly trellised, tied carefully, meticulously fertilized and hilled to help the plants grow well.

Mr. Tam shared: “When the cucumbers were small, I intercropped them with hotpot vegetables and sweet cabbage. After harvesting, I focused on taking care of the cucumbers. The same goes for squash. The vegetables are harvested before the squash climbs the trellis.”

Thanks to the reasonable way of doing things, Mr. Tam has effectively utilized the land area, reduced risks due to weather, and maintained a stable source of income. In addition to his family's land, he also rented more fields from villagers to expand production, earning more than 100 million VND each year from winter crops.

Mrs. Them said that every year, after harvesting corn, the family quickly prepares the land to plant winter crops. Because the family has few workers, Mrs. Them chose to grow pumpkins and leafy vegetables, both to serve family meals and to earn an additional income of more than ten million VND per crop.

According to Ms. Them, intercropping not only helps increase productivity but also limits pests and diseases thanks to crop diversity.
