Earning billions from raising clam seeds
Born and raised in a coastal area, Mr. Bui Van Thuan, Chi Cuong village, Nam Cuong commune, has a life closely linked to the sea. Realizing that his hometown's sea has a lot of potential and strengths for aquaculture, Mr. Thuan had the idea of developing the economy by raising clam seeds. Mr. Thuan said: When I started my business by raising clam seeds, I encountered many difficulties and challenges such as: little capital, no experience in raising clam seeds, causing my family to go bankrupt many times. In the first year of raising clam seeds, I suffered losses. I followed the years of good harvest and compared them with the years of bad harvest and then drew my own practical experiences. During the process of raising clam seeds, I constantly learned more experience, participated in training courses on knowledge and techniques of raising clams, as well as visited successful clam seed farming models in other provinces. From my own practical experience in raising clams, I regularly regulated seawater into the farming area reasonably and took care of them according to the process, so the clams gave high productivity. Compared to extensive shrimp farming, clam farming is more effective. My 2 hectares of clam farming have brought economic efficiency of over 1 billion VND/year.
Currently, the source of clam seeds in Hung Phu and Nam Cuong communes not only meets the needs of local people but also supplies customers in neighboring provinces. Mr. Nguyen Van Bien, a trader in Hoang Thanh commune ( Thanh Hoa province) who specializes in buying clam seeds from households in Nam Cuong commune, informed: Every season, I often buy tons of clam seeds locally. The source of clam seeds here is very high quality, reasonable price, the type of 1,000 pieces/kg is sold for 38,000 VND/kg, the large type of 100 pieces/kg is priced at 16,000 VND/kg.

Developing sustainable clam breeding
In recent years, coastal localities of the province have mobilized resources to invest in construction and planning of clam breeding areas, ensuring the supply of clam breeding sources in the province as well as neighboring provinces. Mr. Bui Tuan Anh, Chairman of the People's Committee of Hung Phu commune, said: In the period of 2025 - 2030, Hung Phu commune strives for an average growth rate of production value of over 25%/year; average income per capita by 2030 to reach over 110 million VND/year; the rate of poor households according to the multidimensional poverty standard by 2030 to decrease to below 1%. To achieve the set goals, the commune promotes its coastal potential and strengths, develops all areas of exploitation, aquaculture and seafood processing. In particular, the commune promotes propaganda to raise people's awareness of the importance of sustainable aquaculture development in general, clam breeding in particular, to encourage people and businesses to pay attention to developing more sustainable aquaculture areas; Building infrastructure for high-quality clam seed production to serve the needs of the province and neighboring provinces. Currently, Hung Phu commune has developed 65 hectares of clam seed nursery.
Chairman of Nam Cuong Commune People's Committee Bui Thanh Lich informed: In recent years, agriculture continues to play a key role in the commune's economy, in which aquaculture has been bringing economic value to the people, contributing to the economic restructuring in the locality. Currently, over 600 hectares of Nam Cuong's clam breeding area brings economic efficiency of 180 billion VND/year. To encourage the expansion of clam breeding production areas, the commune creates favorable conditions for aquaculture households to access loans from banks to invest in renovating and solidifying ponds, purchasing equipment, water supply and drainage; organizing classes to transfer farming techniques; increasing the application of scientific and technical advances to improve productivity, quality and economic value.

According to Mr. Hoang Minh Giang, Head of the Department of Sea and Fisheries (Department of Agriculture and Environment), currently, the area of clam seedling nursery in the province reaches over 700 hectares, mainly concentrated in the communes of Hung Phu, Nam Cuong... annually supplying over 1,000 million clam seeds. In order for clam seedling farming to develop sustainably, contributing to increasing people's income, in the coming time, the Department of Sea and Fisheries will continue to advise superiors to request coastal localities to well implement aquaculture projects and plans; focus on investing in construction of infrastructure works for concentrated clam seedling production and nursery areas; encourage people to take advantage of water surface areas that are not used for aquaculture or are not effectively used for aquaculture to switch to clam seedling farming; develop mechanisms and policies to encourage economic sectors to invest capital, labor, science and technology to produce clam seeds locally; Continue to research and replicate the clam farming model with the motto of biosafety associated with environmental protection.
