Built decades ago, these are two famous seafood markets in Da Nang that attract many locals and tourists. However, Mai market - Chieu market (both located in Son Tra district, Da Nang city) are in a state of serious degradation and need investment and upgrading.
Established in 1953, Mai market is located on Nguyen Phan Vinh street, Tho Quang ward, Son Tra district, Da Nang city with an area of about 2,000 m2.
After many renovations and upgrades, Mai market was upgraded to a type 2 market, under the management board of Son Tra district markets.
The market mainly operates in the morning with the main item being fresh seafood.
After more than 70 years of operation, many items of the market have rotted, the ceiling of the kiosk has rotted the walls. When it rains, the walls seep water and flow down to the floor of the kiosk, making the goods wet and moldy.
The drainage system on both sides of the market is also degraded.
The roofs of the main market and the fish market are both degraded and leak frequently.
Mai market traders shared that on rainy days, the rainwater leaks, making it impossible to trade and the goods get moldy, damaging them.
According to research, in 2015, the People's Committee of Da Nang City agreed in principle to allow investment in the new Mai market project with a scale of 14 billion VND. However, the project has not been implemented for many reasons, partly due to land acquisition problems.

Similar to the Afternoon Market (located at the intersection of Le Tan Trung and Ho Hoc Lam streets), the market gathers and starts to get crowded from around 3pm every day.

At the market, there are about 200 traders registered to trade seafood and food and beverage items for the daily needs of people in Tho Quang, Man Thai, Nai Hien Dong wards... of Son Tra district. This is also the place that supplies a large amount of seafood to restaurants and eateries in the city.

However, after more than 60 years of operation, Chieu Market is now in a state of serious degradation and pollution. The entrance to the market from Ngo Quyen is a narrow alley, so people coming to the market often have to jostle. The market floor is always wet because of the overflowing wastewater, especially the seafood area which always has a fishy smell.

All three neighboring sides are close to residential houses, so it is quite cramped, the electrical wiring system is tangled, making it difficult to ensure fire safety.

The representative of the Chieu Market Management Board said that the market has seriously degraded, making trading difficult. Currently, people want to upgrade it so they can trade with peace of mind.
The land at 35 Ngo Quyen Street is being planned by the Son Tra District government to move the Chieu Market and Mai Market here to build a spacious, civilized, and clean market.
