The arrests of more than 1,200 Chinese nationals took place in areas controlled by the United Wa State Army (UWSA) in eastern Myanmar's Shan State during raids on September 5 and 6, AP reported on September 9, citing Nyi Rang, a UWSA liaison officer. Citing figures from China's Ministry of Public Security , Xinhua also gave a similar figure for those arrested on September 6.
Mr Nyi Rang also said the detainees were handed over to Chinese police at the border gate in Panghsang, also known as Pangkham city, the centre of the Wa government-administered region on the border with China's Yunnan province.

Cybercrime has become a major problem in Asia, as many of the workers hired to carry out online scams are victims of criminal gangs who lure victims with fake job offers and then force them to work in harsh conditions.
Last month, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights said criminal gangs had forced hundreds of thousands of people in Southeast Asia into fraudulent activities including fake romances, bogus investments and illegal gambling schemes.
Also according to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, online fraud centers in Myanmar are believed to be located in towns in southeastern Kayin State along the Thai border and the Kokang Autonomous Region, as well as the Wa-administered city of Mong La in Shan State in the border area with China, according to AP.
Wa liaison officer Nyi Rang said online scam activities were not allowed in the area under UWS control, and similar arrests had been made before.
The UWSA is the largest and most powerful ethnic armed organization among the major minority groups in Myanmar, with about 30,000 armed soldiers, according to AP.
