Need to strengthen the teaching staff

With the goal of absorbing the quintessence of humanity and international standards, educating and training Vietnamese students to become global citizens, aiming towards a modern and integrated education, Resolution 71 pays special attention to promoting the teaching and learning of English.

At Tan Thanh 1 Primary School (Tich Luong Ward, Thai Nguyen Province), since the 2018 General Education Program was implemented, the school has simultaneously implemented compulsory English teaching for grades 3-4-5, and optional English teaching for grades 1-2, helping students get acquainted with foreign languages early.

Ms. Ngo Thi Ngoc Lan, Principal of the school, said: The requirement to gradually make English the second language in schools in Resolution 71 is a very important orientation. For primary school level, this is even more meaningful, because learning English from a young age will help children have an early foundation, penetrating into the subconscious to form language and thinking ability in a profound and sustainable way.

The school will invest in upgrading new English classroom equipment, implementing IOE exams for students from grade 1, and at the same time enhancing the organization of educational activities as well as teaching some subjects in English.

According to the school's Board of Directors, one of the particularly important issues is to further strengthen the English teaching staff. Currently, in terms of English, the school only has 1 permanent teacher and 1 contract teacher according to the fixed quota, so there are still many difficulties in arranging teaching hours as well as organizing integrated educational activities.

“We really hope and wait to add more English teachers to the staff, so that we can arrange and organize English teaching more effectively, so that teachers can wholeheartedly improve the quality of the subject. We also hope that Pedagogical Universities will focus on training teachers to teach subjects in English, creating a team to improve the quality of teaching,” Ms. Ngo Thi Ngoc Lan proposed.

Goals and roadmap

For Phu Binh High School (Thai Nguyen province), teaching and learning English has always been identified as a priority task that needs to be given top priority. Receiving Resolution 71, the school has more motivation and determination to further improve the quality of English subject.

Currently, all 12 English teachers of the school are qualified, of which 3 are masters, so the quality of teaching this subject is always guaranteed. In addition, some subjects such as Math, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, STEM activities are also taught in English, helping to make the access to knowledge in general and improving English proficiency of students in particular more diverse, lively and attractive.

Mr. Duong Xuan Binh, Principal of the school, said: The goal of teaching and learning English set out in Resolution 71 is extremely meaningful and strategic, especially necessary for education to progress on the path of development and integration; the school will closely follow this goal to improve the quality of English teaching according to the roadmap, suitable to the specific conditions of its unit.

Accordingly, the school will continue to promote the activities of the English Club, effectively integrate English learning into STEM activities, encourage teachers of all subjects to teach in English, advise and guide students to refer to more information to learn and study English through online platforms, and coordinate with the English center to take advantage of all resources to support students more effectively.

“Because the conditions of many rural families are still difficult, and the general level of English proficiency of students is not high, the school has determined that it will have to make more efforts to communicate with parents to raise awareness of the importance of English, and coordinate closely to create the best conditions and mindset for students to learn English,” said Mr. Duong Xuan Binh.

Mr. Nguyen Van Hung, Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training of Thai Nguyen, emphasized: To improve the quality of English teaching, many synchronous factors are needed, such as local incentive and support policies; the role of education management agencies in guiding, coordinating and monitoring the quality; the role of enterprises in providing technology solutions, programs and learning materials; the response of the teaching staff, etc.
