Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, issued the warning at a press conference on August 1st.
According to information published on the official UN website, citing the latest Integrated Food Security Classification (IPC) report, Mr. Djuarrric stated that this is the first time in the history of the IPC survey that a warning of catastrophic famine has been issued in Sudan.
Accordingly, 14 regions of the country are considered to be at "risk of famine" in the coming months. In fact, one in two Sudanese people struggle to find enough food each day. Notably, the country has recorded deaths due to starvation.
According to Mr. Dujarric, the World Food Programme (WFP) is stepping up its emergency response to save more lives in Sudan by increasing food aid and seeking effective and innovative ways to provide immediate support to millions of people in the country, especially in hard-to-reach areas.
The spokesperson stressed the urgent need for a significant increase in funding to scale up support aimed at preventing hunger.
The UN and its partners have also warned of the risk of more Sudanese falling into catastrophic famine if the current conflict, which broke out in April 2023, does not end.
Meanwhile, the conflict response committee in Wad Madani, in Gezira State in central Sudan, said at least 17 people were killed in two attacks carried out by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in two villages in the state on August 1.
RSF has not yet commented on the two attacks.
According to recent UN data, the conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF - Sudan's regular army) and the Sudanese Regional Forces (RSF) has killed at least 16,650 people and displaced approximately 10.7 million internally, while around 2.2 million have fled to neighboring countries.
