Spreading the green school model

Many models for collecting and recycling plastic waste and activities to raise awareness about environmental protection have been implemented in schools throughout the city. This aims to build green schools and contribute to "Building Da Nang - an environmentally friendly city".

Many good and practical models.

In preschools, the movement to recycle waste into teaching aids and toys for students is being promoted. At Binh Minh Preschool (Hai Chau ward), parents can easily see the changes from the schoolyard to each classroom. Teachers have repurposed old paint cans into plant pots, toys, and learning tools for children, creating a vibrant and welcoming environment.

Ms. Luong Thuy Quynh, Principal of Binh Minh Kindergarten, said: “With skill and creativity, teachers have transformed seemingly discarded items such as cans, milk cartons, cardboard, styrofoam, plastic bottles... into teaching aids. In addition, they also simulate familiar household items such as helmets, car tires, and sinks so that children can learn and play in a visual and lively way.”

Beautifully decorated paint cans become tools for children to play ball games, arrange into moving caterpillars, or use as "emotional containers" to help children recognize and name emotional states such as happy, sad, angry, scared, and normal.

According to Ms. Quynh, recycling school supplies not only saves costs but also stimulates creative thinking, creates enthusiasm for learning among students, and raises environmental awareness for both teachers and students.

At the primary school level, the waste sorting and fundraising model also brings many meaningful benefits. At Hoa Lu Primary School (Thanh Khe ward), the school's Youth Union launched the "Waste Sorting House" model, encouraging each member and student to collect plastic bottles, soda cans, scrap paper, etc., and put them in the "house" located in the schoolyard. The recyclable waste is then sold to raise funds for the Youth Union's "Adopted Child" program.

Ms. Huynh Thi Thanh Tinh, Principal of Hoa Lu Primary School, said: “From this model, the Youth Union raises about 2 million VND each year, supporting two students in difficult circumstances. The activity contributes to maintaining a green, clean, and beautiful environment while spreading the spirit of sharing and compassion among students.”

Raising environmental awareness in schools.

Since 2022, the Da Nang Youth Union has implemented the "Small Plan Bus - Waste Sorting, Fundraising to Help Friends" program in 14 primary schools across the city. Recognizing its effectiveness, the program has been expanded to more than 40 primary and secondary schools, with an additional 12 schools in Hoa Vang district expected to participate in 2025.

According to Le Cong Hung, Secretary of the Da Nang City Youth Union, the program continues to be implemented extensively, contributing to raising environmental awareness and fostering a spirit of sharing among students. "The students are young volunteers who, through practical actions such as sorting waste and spreading awareness to friends and family, have contributed to building a green lifestyle in the community," Mr. Hung said.

In addition, Da Nang city has received and implemented many environmental projects, including the project "Developing and implementing a roadmap to reduce the use of single-use plastics in schools" funded by the Pacific Environment and Resources Center.

The project was implemented in 2024 at four schools in Son Tra district: Vanh Khuyen Kindergarten, Quang Trung Primary School, Nguyen Chi Thanh Secondary School, and Son Tra High School. The goal was to improve teachers' communication and education skills and encourage students to practice reducing the use of single-use plastics.

According to statistics, 229 lessons incorporated plastic reduction content, with 7,398 students participating; 12 extracurricular sessions promoting plastic reduction attracted 9,152 students; and 63 solutions for reducing single-use plastic were implemented in schools.

Mr. Bui Minh Quang, Principal of Son Tra High School, said: “Since participating in the project, the awareness of teachers and students about plastic waste has significantly improved. The school has considerably reduced the use of single-use plastics, built green, clean, and sustainable habits, established a "We Live Green" club, and aims to build an environmentally friendly school.”

Simultaneously, the Da Nang Department of Education and Training is implementing awareness and training activities within the framework of the "Building Da Nang - an environmentally friendly city" project by 2025. Specifically, the education sector is organizing training conferences to enhance the knowledge and skills of administrators and teachers on environmental protection, combating plastic waste, and sorting waste at source.

In addition, environmental protection and household waste sorting communication programs were implemented in 25 public high schools, continuing education centers, and 15 commune/ward People's Committees.

The Department of Education and Training of Da Nang City stated that the education sector is implementing many activities to raise awareness among officials, teachers, students, and parents about the role of environmental protection in improving the quality of life. This aims to foster concrete actions in environmental protection, creating green, clean, and beautiful school environments, and actively contributing to the goal of "Building Da Nang - an environmentally friendly city."
