Spreading the green school model

Many models of collecting and recycling plastic waste and activities to raise awareness of environmental protection have been implemented in schools in the city. Thereby, aiming to build green schools, contributing to "Building Da Nang - an environmental city".

Many good models, practical efficiency

In kindergartens, the movement of recycling waste into teaching aids and toys for students is being promoted. Coming to Binh Minh Kindergarten (Hai Chau Ward), parents can easily see the changes from the school yard to each classroom. From old paint cans, teachers have made use of them to make flower pots, toys, and learning tools for children, creating a lively and familiar landscape.

Ms. Luong Thuy Quynh, Principal of Binh Minh Kindergarten, said: “With ingenuity and creativity, teachers have turned seemingly discarded items such as cans, milk cartons, cardboard, foam, plastic bottles... into teaching aids. In addition, teachers also simulate familiar household items such as helmets, tires, and sinks so that children can learn and play visually and vividly.”

Beautifully decorated paint cans become tools for children to throw balls, arrange into moving worms, or make "emotional cans" to help children recognize and name the states of happiness, sadness, anger, fear, and neutrality.

According to Ms. Quynh, recycling not only helps save costs but also stimulates creative thinking, creates interest in learning for students, and raises environmental awareness for both teachers and students.

At the primary level, the model of waste classification and fundraising for friends also brings a lot of meaning. At Hoa Lu Primary School (Thanh Khe Ward), the school's Youth Union launched the model "Garbage Classification House", encouraging each member and student to collect plastic bottles, cans, scrap paper... and put them in the "house" located in the school yard. The recycled waste is then sold to raise funds for the program "Youth Union's Foster Children".

Ms. Huynh Thi Thanh Tinh, Principal of Hoa Lu Primary School, said: “From this model, each year the Youth Union raises about 2 million VND to support two students in difficult circumstances. The activity not only contributes to preserving a green - clean - beautiful environment, but also spreads the spirit of sharing and kindness among students.”

Raising awareness of environmental protection in schools

Since 2022, the Da Nang City Youth Union has implemented the program "Small Plan Bus - Waste Classification, Fundraising for Friends" at 14 primary schools across the city. Realizing the effectiveness, up to now, it has expanded to more than 40 primary and secondary schools, of which Hoa Vang district alone has 12 more schools participating in 2025.

Secretary of the Da Nang City Youth Union Le Cong Hung said that the program continues to be widely implemented, contributing to raising awareness of environmental protection and arousing the spirit of sharing among students. “Students are young volunteers, through practical actions such as sorting trash, spreading propaganda to friends and family, contributing to building a green lifestyle in the community,” Mr. Hung said.

Along with that, Da Nang city received and organized many environmental projects, including the project "Building and implementing a roadmap to reduce single-use plastic use in schools" sponsored by the Pacific Environment and Resources Center.

The project will be implemented in 2024 at 4 schools in Son Tra district including: Vanh Khuyen Kindergarten, Quang Trung Primary School, Nguyen Chi Thanh Secondary School and Son Tra High School. The goal is to improve communication education skills for teachers and encourage students to practice reducing the use of disposable plastics.

According to statistics, 229 lessons integrated plastic reduction content, with 7,398 students participating; 12 extracurricular lessons on plastic reduction propaganda attracted 9,152 students; at the same time, 63 solutions to reduce single-use plastic were applied in schools.

Mr. Bui Minh Quang, Principal of Son Tra High School, said: “Since participating in the project, the awareness of teachers and students about plastic waste has been significantly improved. The school has significantly reduced the use of disposable plastic products, built green - clean - sustainable habits, established the "I live green" club, aiming to build an environmentally friendly school."

At the same time, the Department of Education and Training of Da Nang city is implementing propaganda and training activities within the framework of the Project "Building Da Nang - an environmental city" by 2025. Specifically, the education sector organizes training conferences to improve knowledge and skills for managers and teachers on environmental protection, combating plastic waste and sorting waste at source.

In addition, the environmental protection communication program and household waste classification were deployed in 25 public schools, continuing education centers and 15 People's Committees of communes and wards.

The Department of Education and Training of the city said that the education sector has implemented many activities to raise awareness among officials, teachers, students and parents about the role of environmental protection in the quality of life. From there, specific actions are formed in environmental protection, creating a green, clean and beautiful school landscape, actively contributing to the goal of "Building Da Nang - an environmental city".
