IMPRESSIONS AFTER 10 YEARS
Mong Village, also known as Hamlet 5, Ro Men Commune, currently has 184 households and 1,059 people, with 100% of them being H'Mong ethnic people. This is an ethnic group from the Northwest highlands who migrated to Dam Rong District to do new economic activities . An interesting thing is that although Mong Village does not have many advantages in agricultural land like some other villages and hamlets of Ro Men Commune, with the attention of authorities at all levels, the solidarity and efforts of the people to overcome difficulties in labor and production, the lives of the H'Mong ethnic people here have been stabilized and many households have become rich in their new homeland.
Mr. Hoang Xuan Thai - Party Cell Secretary and Head of Village 5, Ro Men Commune said: After entering Dam Rong, a part of the H'Mong people in Sub-areas 179, Sub-areas 81 and Da Mpo of Lieng S'rong Commune had to relocate to settle in Village 5, Ro Men Commune. In the first days of coming here to do business, people encountered many difficulties and hardships, and the problem was how to help people overcome these difficulties and stabilize their lives. Therefore, the village chief and the people were struggling with the questions: What to plant? What to raise? Where to get plants, seeds, and investment capital? How to consume agricultural products?... Due to many difficulties and not yet mastering the techniques of planting and caring for long-term industrial crops, people mainly cultivate upland rice, cassava and bo bo to ensure food sources to solve the immediate hunger. On the other hand, in the production development orientation, due to the lack of understanding and careful research on the characteristics of each crop suitable for the local climate and soil conditions, some crops did not bring economic efficiency. “In 2008, our people focused on growing Catimo coffee. Because the characteristics of Catimo coffee were not suitable for the hot climate conditions, it led to failure. With the attention of the local government in organizing training courses on science and technology transfer, supporting loans and seedlings, since 2014, people have switched to growing Robusta coffee. With the right direction, after only 10 years of converting crop varieties, it has helped the H'Mong people gradually eliminate hunger, reduce poverty and become rich legitimately”, Mr. Hoang Xuan Thai affirmed.
Up to now, Mong Village has a total production land area of 232.5 hectares, of which coffee trees are 188.8 hectares; rice fields are 30 hectares; pepper trees are 2 hectares. Fruit trees of all kinds include durian, avocado and pineapple with a total area of 33.3 hectares. The remaining 4 hectares are cashew, curry, macadamia, doi and jackfruit trees. In addition, people also combine to develop livestock and poultry farming with a number of nearly 2,500 heads and take advantage of pond and lake water surface to raise fish to improve the quality of life. After more than 10 years of efforts and thanks to effective implementation of economic development orientations, people's lives have gradually stabilized and improved, the number of poor and near-poor households has decreased to 12 households.
30% OF HOUSEHOLDS HAVE INCOME IN THE BILLIONS
Having gone through difficult days in the journey of economic development to build a family life, since setting foot on Dam Rong land, many H'Mong ethnic households have always shown a strong determination to push back poverty and backwardness. Mr. Giang Seo Pao - Head of the Front Work Committee of Village 5 expressed: "With the nature of diligence, hard work and perseverance in production, after the rooster crows, people often wake up early to prepare everything to go to the fields, at 6:00 a.m. most of the people go to the fields and do not return home until late afternoon at 5:30 p.m., or even 6:00 p.m., so work efficiency is improved".
Mr. Vang Seo Pao (born 1981) said: “Currently, my family has about 4 hectares of production land. Previously, I mainly cultivated coffee trees with an average yield of 6 tons of coffee beans/year. Recently, I converted some coffee areas to grow durian trees, so my family has 1 hectare of coffee left. Up to now, I have planted 400 durian trees, of which 100 trees have been harvested, 200 trees in the third year... In the 2024 crop year, my family will have a total income of over 800 million VND from durian and coffee; at the same time, I invested in building a new house with an area of 120 m2, worth 900 million VND. In addition, I also equipped more machinery for agricultural production.”
Sharing with us, many commune cadres as well as Party cell secretaries and heads of village Front Work Committees told us about the journey of economic development, building cultural life and propaganda, mobilizing people to respond to the New Rural Construction Movement. In the New Rural Construction Program, each cadre and party member is both a model leader in implementation and a propagandist to help people correctly perceive the purpose and meaning of the New Rural Construction Program with the goal of the program being that people are well-off and the countryside becomes more civilized and modern. Therefore, Party committees and local authorities at all levels determined to first mobilize people to eliminate the mindset of relying on and waiting for State investment; knowing how to save in spending; focusing on sustainable hunger eradication and poverty reduction; paying attention to the application of scientific and technical advances, transforming the structure of crops and livestock in accordance with the actual situation in the locality...
Mr. Le Cong Trong - Chairman of the People's Committee of Ro Men commune, said: "When they first migrated to live in the commune, most of the people in Village 5 were poor households, farming backwardly, mainly cassava. Later, thanks to the right policy, people switched to coffee and fruit trees. In recent years, the market for agricultural products has been stable, and many good production households have appeared in Mong Village with incomes ranging from several hundred million VND to over a billion VND. Of which, 30% of households have an income of over one billion VND/year, and about 70% of households have an income of 500 - 800 million VND/year. Typical households include Mr. Ly Xuan Vu, Ly A Ho, Vang Seo Manh, Sung A Sang, Hoang Seo Tanh... with an income of one billion VND or more. From the end of 2024 until now, the H'Mong people have invested in building many new houses with a value of several hundred million VND to several billion VND".
