The southern area of Ho Chi Minh City is entering a period of significant transformation with a series of large-scale transportation infrastructure projects, totaling tens of trillions of VND in investment. These projects, expected to be implemented and completed between now and 2027, are anticipated to thoroughly address traffic bottlenecks, enhance inter-regional connectivity, and create a new, more modern urban landscape.

Interregional connectivity and gateway projects

These infrastructure projects not only serve the transportation needs within the city but also act as important gateways for trade and commerce.

Binh Khanh Bridge and Ben Luc - Long Thanh Expressway

The Binh Khanh Bridge is one of the two largest cable-stayed bridges on the Ben Luc - Long Thanh expressway, connecting Nha Be and Can Gio districts. With a total investment of over 2,800 billion VND, the bridge is 2.76 km long and 21.75 m wide, accommodating four lanes of traffic. The structure boasts a navigable clearance of 55 m, the highest in Vietnam, ensuring the passage of large vessels. Currently, the project is 99% complete and nearing completion, contributing to the completion of the southern expressway network.

Can Gio Bridge

The Can Gio Bridge project, spanning the Soai Rap River and connecting Can Gio District with the city center, has an estimated total investment of over 10,500 billion VND. The bridge will replace the currently overloaded Binh Khanh ferry, significantly shortening travel time. This project is strategically significant, paving the way for the development of a coastal urban area and an international transshipment port in Can Gio. Construction is expected to begin in 2026.

Expanding National Highway 50

The project to expand National Highway 50, the section passing through Binh Chanh district, has a total investment of nearly 1,500 billion VND. The nearly 7 km long road will be widened to 34 meters for 6 lanes. This project will enhance connectivity between Ho Chi Minh City and Long An province and other provinces in the Mekong Delta. The parallel section has already been put into use, and the entire project is expected to be open to traffic by the end of 2025.

Addressing inner-city traffic bottlenecks

A series of new bridges and roads have been constructed to alleviate congestion on existing routes, which are frequently gridlocked during peak hours.

Nguyen Khoai Bridge and Road

With a total investment of 3,700 billion VND, the Nguyen Khoai bridge and road project will build a new connecting axis between District 7, District 4, and District 1. The project has a total length of nearly 5 km, starting from D1 road (Him Lam area, District 7), crossing the Te Canal and Ben Nghe Canal to connect to Vo Van Kiet road (District 1). The project is expected to significantly reduce traffic pressure on the Te Canal bridge and the surrounding area, and is scheduled to commence in the fourth quarter of this year.

Thu Thiem 4 Bridge

The Thu Thiem 4 Bridge will connect the Thu Thiem New Urban Area (Thu Duc City) with District 7, crossing the Saigon River. The project has a total length of 2.16 km, with 6 lanes, and an estimated total investment of 4,365 to 8,953 billion VND. Upon completion, the bridge will create a new connection between the two most dynamically developing urban areas of the city. Construction is expected to begin in 2026.

Expanding the North-South axis (Nguyen Huu Tho road)

The Nguyen Huu Tho road will be upgraded with the construction of a 7.2 km elevated road, connecting Nguyen Van Linh road to the Ben Luc - Long Thanh expressway. The project has a total investment of nearly 9,900 billion VND, with a scale of 4 elevated lanes and parallel roads on both sides. The construction will address the serious traffic congestion on this vital road and is expected to begin in 2026.

Binh Tien Bridge and Road

The 3.66 km long Binh Tien bridge and road project will connect District 6 and District 8 with Binh Chanh District (Nguyen Van Linh intersection). With a total cost of nearly 6,300 billion VND, the project is a key infrastructure project that will help alleviate congestion on existing roads and promote urban development in the southwestern area. Construction is expected to begin in 2026.

Upgrading infrastructure and improving the urban environment.

Besides major projects, the city also focuses on renovating public infrastructure and the environment, improving the quality of life for its residents.

Renovation of the Twin Canals

The project to dredge, build infrastructure, and improve the environment on the northern bank of the Doi Canal (District 8) has a total investment of over 7,300 billion VND from the state budget. The project includes items such as embankment construction, bridges, technical infrastructure, and wharves, aiming not only to prevent flooding and improve environmental sanitation but also to beautify the urban area and change its appearance.

Construct new bridges at Rach Tom and Rach Doi.

On Le Van Luong road (Nha Be district), the two old iron bridges, Rach Tom and Rach Doi, will be replaced with reinforced concrete bridges. Construction of the new Rach Tom bridge (at a cost of 500 billion VND) has already begun. Construction of the new Rach Doi bridge (at a cost of nearly 800 billion VND) is expected to start at the end of this year. The construction of these two new bridges will eliminate traffic bottlenecks and ensure traffic safety on the route connecting Nha Be with Long An.

The old Rach Doi bridge on Le Van Luong street is in serious disrepair.
The existing Rach Doi Bridge was built before 1975 and has seriously deteriorated after many years of use.
