On September 11, the “Forum to identify the current situation of linking consumption and export of Vietnamese durian” was held directly in Buon Ma Thuot City, Dak Lak and online with 1,000 connecting points nationwide. Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Le Minh Hoan chaired the connecting point at the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Vietnam currently has more than 112,000 hectares of durian with a total output of about 900,000 tons. In 2023, the export turnover is expected to reach over 1.5 billion USD. However, currently, the phenomenon of fighting for purchase, fighting for sale, price chaos, breaking stakes, canceling contracts, breaking the chain of links... is taking place in durian growing areas. The above situation leads to violations of State regulations on growing area codes, packaging facilities, food safety as well as export standards; risk of undermining the reputation, quality, and brand of Vietnamese durian products in the world market.

Mr. Le Anh Trung, Director of Foreign Affairs of Van Hoa Holding Group (headquartered in Ho Chi Minh City), said that for this year's durian crop in Dak Lak, the unit has committed to supplying about 20,000 tons of durian to the Chinese market. However, the current price of durian is too high, causing some partners and customers to want to cut orders. According to Mr. Le Anh Trung, the group has linked production with farmers, including training policies, improving production capacity, building growing area codes, and supporting capital of 50 million VND/ha. However, the linkage plan failed because traders and brokers came to the gardens to close and deposit in advance, causing many gardeners to break the linkage. The failed linkage policy will cause difficulties in continuing to invest later.

Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Le Minh Hoan assessed that the strategy for agricultural and rural development is expressed through "cooperation - association - market". Therefore, if we want the durian industry in particular and other industries in general to develop, we must reorganize the industry structure sustainably. In which, there must be the presence of both production and consumption. "It is necessary to create a close connection between enterprises, cooperatives, and production households. Enterprises and people must change the relationship from "willing to buy and sell" to cooperation. We must be determined to solve the problem of "farmers thinking seasonally, enterprises thinking commercially", the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development suggested.

In addition, Minister Le Minh Hoan also said that the growing area code is currently only at the encouragement level, and will be mandatory in the coming time. Everything must be in accordance with standards and regulations, and there will be no more spontaneous situations.
