Five new non-permanent members of the UNSC elected by the UN General Assembly in June 2024, including Denmark, Greece, Pakistan, Panama and Somalia, have officially taken over their duties, replacing Ecuador, Japan, Malta, Mozambique and Switzerland whose terms have expired.
The flag-raising ceremony of the new members for the 2025-2026 term is expected to be held in a special ceremony outside the meeting room of the most powerful UN body.
The President of the Security Council for January 2025, Ambassador Amar Bendjama of Algeria, thanked the outgoing members and warmly welcomed the new members. Speaking to the press, Mr. Bendjama assessed that “the international community is facing many challenges that threaten world security and peace, of which the situation in the Middle East is very worrying.”
The Algerian diplomat called on all members of the Security Council to work tirelessly and effectively to uphold the values of multilateralism.
The UN Security Council consists of 15 members, including 5 permanent members: the UK, France, the US, Russia, and China; and 10 non-permanent members elected by the UN General Assembly in rotation, each member serving a 2-year term.
