According to Lonely Planet , Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park was recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 2003. This place has the oldest limestone mountains in Asia, formed about 400 million years ago.

“With hundreds of caves, many of extraordinary size and length, and spectacular underground rivers, Phong Nha is a caving adventurer’s paradise and a real draw for anyone who loves the most pristine natural spectacle,” Lonely Planet added.

The caves are considered the most impressive highlight in Quang Binh . However, visitors should not miss other attractions on the ground, as well as experience hiking in the forest, learning about the history of the local army and people fighting or mountain biking.

Lonely Planet notes that more than 100 species of mammals; 10 species of primates, tigers, elephants and saola; a rare Asian antelope; 81 species of reptiles and amphibians; and more than 300 species of birds have been recorded in Phong Nha.

Son Doong Cave is second on the list. Following behind are Tu Lan Cave and Thien Duong Cave.

The list of must-see attractions in North Central Vietnam, according to Lonely Planet, also includes Hang En, Van Long Nature Reserve, Hang Toi, Trang An, Cuc Phuong National Park, Phat Diem Cathedral, Hang Mua and Bai Dinh Pagoda.

Since its first publication in 1973, 'Across Asia on the Cheap', Lonely Planet has been considered the 'empire' that publishes the most successful travel guides in the world.
