According to the authors of the University of Sao Paulo (Brazil), many of the affected genes are directly related to inflammation, blood pressure regulation and sugar-fat metabolism. These are all important factors affecting cardiovascular health and body metabolism.
The study, published in the journal Molecular Nutrition & Food Research, suggests that these changes may help reduce inflammation, improve blood vessel function and increase metabolic responsiveness in some people.
According to scientists , these effects come not only from vitamin C but also from biological compounds characteristic of oranges, especially flavonoids such as hesperidin. This group of substances is known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and may play an important role in influencing the gene activity of immune cells.
However, the study had significant limitations. It involved only 20 healthy adults. Additionally, the trial did not include a control group that received a placebo drink.
The benefits of orange juice vary considerably depending on the individual. For example, studies have shown that some changes in gene expression are more pronounced in lean people than in overweight people, suggesting that body type and metabolic health may have a major impact on how well a person responds.

However, drinking orange juice does mean consuming a significant amount of natural sugars, which can be problematic for people who have trouble metabolizing sugars or are at risk of blood sugar-related diseases. So while the study does provide new insights into the biological effects of orange juice, it doesn’t necessarily mean drinking more is better.
