ChatGPT, OpenAI's AI-powered chatbot, saw its first monthly traffic decline since its launch in late November last year in June, according to analytics firm Similarweb.

Specifically, traffic from desktop and mobile devices worldwide to the app's website decreased by 9.7% compared to May, while the number of visitors decreased by 5.7%. The time visitors spent on the website also decreased by 8.5%.

“The drop in traffic is a sign that the novelty of ChatGPT is wearing off,” said David Carr, senior manager at Similarweb.

ChatGPT is known as the fastest growing consumer app ever, reaching 100 million active users just 2 months after its public launch.

The app's website currently has more than 1.5 billion visits per month, ranking among the top 20 websites in the world, and far surpassing Microsoft's Bing chatbot and Google's Bard, which were launched later.

“I think the difficulty increases when you go from zero to 100 million users so quickly. The infrastructure is extremely heavy, which leads to less accuracy,” said Sarah Hindlian-Bowler, head of technology research at Macquarie Group (Australia).

OpenAI launched ChatGPT on iOS in May, which has caused a drop in traffic to its website, but it could also be due to a drop in demand from students during the summer break.

According to statistics from data.ai, as of July 4, there have been 17 million downloads of the ChatGPT app on iOS, with the peak being on May 31. The US is still the country with the most downloads of this app, with an average of 530 thousand downloads per week in the first 6 weeks.

The recent slowdown in growth could help OpenAI control the costs of running its ChatGPT system, which requires massive amounts of computing power to respond to queries.

ChatGPT is free to use, but it also offers a premium subscription plan where users can pay $20/month to access its more advanced model, GPT-4. According to the latest estimates from YipitData, around 1.5 million people have signed up for this subscription in the US.
