The atmosphere at Man Utd continued to become stifling after the 0-3 defeat to Man City at Etihad Stadium in the fourth round of the Premier League on the evening of September 14. Although the Red Devils' leadership still affirmed their trust in coach Ruben Amorim, many players in the team expressed dissatisfaction and skepticism about the philosophy and ability of the Portuguese strategist.

According to inside sources, many of the Red Devils' stars find it difficult to accept the three-center-back formation that Amorim has always consistently used. Despite the criticism, the 40-year-old coach affirmed that he will not change the 3-4-2-1 system, and frankly stated: "I would rather be fired than change my philosophy."
The defeat to Man City left Man Utd with just 4 points after 4 rounds. This is their worst start in the Premier League since 1992. Before that, the team also caused a shock when they were eliminated from the League Cup by Fourth Division club Grimsby.
Not only players, even legends like Wayne Rooney have openly expressed their confusion with the current style of play. On television, the former Man Utd striker frankly commented: "We watched the match and no one understood what style Man Utd were trying to play. Sadly, they have even gotten worse under Amorim."
The pressure is even greater when statistics show that Amorim has only won 31 points after 31 matches in charge of Man Utd since November last year. Of those, the club has lost 16 matches, the worst performance among the 17 teams participating in the Premier League in the last two seasons. Last season, the Red Devils finished in 15th place and lost in the Europa League final to Tottenham, thereby missing out on European competition for the second time since the Sir Alex era.

However, Man Utd's owners are still patient with the case of coach Amorim. Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who spent 220 million pounds in the summer transfer window, is said to not want to change the coach, because that would lead to another rebuild.
Man Utd will face another huge challenge when they host Chelsea at Old Trafford this weekend. If the Red Devils continue to fail, the situation at the team will likely become more tense and the pressure on coach Amorim will be greater.
