Mask Girl officially aired on August 18. According to data from independent statistics site Flixpatrol, as of August 25, the film is holding the 2nd position on Netflix globally. In Vietnam, the film continuously holds the number one position in Netflix's popular TV show rankings.

Mask Girl is adapted from the book of the same name, about the life of an office worker named Kim Mo Mi. Like other girls her age, Kim Mo Mi goes to work every day with her briefcase. However, she has never been happy with her boring life.

Possessing a modest appearance, Kim Mo Mi always has a big inferiority complex, easily sensitive to criticism. Although she does not have a beautiful face, Mo Mi has dancing ability and a beautiful body.

Every night, Mo Mi appears in livestreams on social media wearing a mask, seducing hundreds of men. Online, Kim Mo Mi is a hot girl with the stage name "Mask Girl", admired by many people.

Among the audience who are infatuated with her is also a male colleague of Mo Mi. The climax of the film occurs when this man discovers Mo Mi's true identity. After that, a person dies and leads to a series of tragedies in Kim Mo Mi's life.

After the incident, Kim Mo Mi had plastic surgery and changed her identity, but she could not live a different life. Most of the film is about the revenge chase between Kim Mo Mi and the victim's mother. Mask Girl has an age limit because the film contains many violent and sensitive scenes.

India Express commented that Mask Girl is a breath of fresh air, completely different from the popular TV series in India. In Vietnam, Mask Girl is attractive because of its fast pace and the "hot" issues of the times cleverly inserted into the film.

Through the chase scenes between the female lead and the victim’s mother, the audience sees the tragedies of modern life where appearance and false values seem to increasingly prevail. The film also clearly depicts the problem of body shaming that is gradually becoming a problem for modern youth.

The female lead Kim Mo Mi is a girl who loves singing and dreams of becoming famous. However, her limited appearance makes Kim Mo Mi's dream more and more distant, turning her into an insecure girl. She gradually gives up her dream of singing, accepting to be a boring office worker, facing hypocrisy every day.

To pursue her dream, Mo Mi has no choice but to wear a mask, become someone else and access the virtual world . Transforming into a hot girl online, Mo Mi receives the attention of a handsome department head, the man of her dreams.

She herself realized that he treated her differently when she was a beautiful girl and when she was an office worker with below average looks. This seemed to be a harsh reality for many young girls in modern society.

"Rookie" Lee Han Byul conquered the audience with her role as Kim Mo Mi in "Mask girl" (Photo: Netflix).

Director Kim Young Hoon portrays Mo Mi's sad and deadlocked life in dark tones and narrow frames. That world is in complete contrast to the fresh, seductive colors in the nightly livestream world of "Girl in a Mask".

The mask seems to have become an indispensable item in modern society - where appearance becomes more important than other values. Mo Mi only receives love and affection when wearing a mask. This makes the young girl sometimes feel bitter.

The character Ju Oh Nam (played by Ahn Jae Hong) - a male office worker who enjoys watching Internet broadcasts after work - also reflects another dark aspect of modern society.

Ju Oh Nam is not liked by everyone because of his limited appearance and eccentric personality. His life changes when he discovers that Mo Mi is actually the famous masked girl online. He is obsessed with the virtual world and cannot live a real life outside.

Talking about his character, actor Ahn Jae Hong said, "He is a company employee who wants to hide during the day and be present in his own world at night."

When asked about the decision to make a dark film like Mask Girl , director Kim Yong Hoon said: " Mask Girl is a story about individuals who are hurt and marginalized by society. Each of them seems to be lost and aimless in their own lives."

The dark corners of modern society such as school violence, gender inequality, body shaming, sexual assault, and the abuse of livestream (live broadcasting) are all mentioned truthfully in Mask Girl.

According to the film's director, Kim Mo Mi, Ju Oh Nam and many other characters in Mask Girl are all good-natured. However, harsh life has pushed them into difficult situations, forcing them to become bad people.

Kim Mo Mi once believed in appreciating natural beauty or "a person's value does not lie in their appearance", but life has made her understand that if she is not beautiful, she is nothing in this society.

She was also disillusioned when she discovered that the man she trusted only wanted to take advantage of her body.

The story of each character in Mask Girl has mentioned the pain and tragic ending of people who are struggling every day in a society full of prejudice, discrimination and only seeing things through appearance.

In addition to its content related to social reality, Mask Girl is also successful because it has an impressive cast and strong acting.

The three actors Lee Han Byul, Nana, and Go Hyun Jung play the female lead Kim Mo Mi at three different times, from when she was an ugly girl to when she became beautiful after plastic surgery and finally in middle age.

"Rookie" Lee Han Byul left a deep impression through her acting with haunting eyes. She portrayed two aspects of the character Mo Mi as a shy female employee and as a hot social media girl.

Idol singer Nana portrayed a more beautiful Kim Mo Mi with a damaged and dark soul after life's upheavals. Veteran star Go Hyun Jung portrayed a Mo Mi with deep inner feelings after becoming a mother.

Actor Ahn Jae Hong gives audiences goosebumps as Joo Oh Nam, a geek with low self-esteem. Meanwhile, veteran actress Yum Hye Ran haunts audiences as Kyung Ja, a crazy and vengeful mother who has lost her son.

Up to now, famous Korean movies mainly deal with love triangles, pure student love or revenge journeys, but Mask Girl is a completely different "spiritual food".

Nme commented that director Kim Young Hoon and Netflix have presented one of the best dark works of Korean television. Moviesr commented that the film leads viewers naturally, interweaving the contrast between dreams and reality to convey profound life lessons.
