Starting June 16th, Mercedes-Benz customers in the US can use the ChatGPT artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot in their luxury vehicles to enhance the capabilities of their voice assistant.
According to Mercedes, U.S. customers who own luxury vehicles equipped with the MBUX infotainment system can download ChatGPT via a Mercedes app or voice commands. Approximately 900,000 Mercedes luxury vehicles in the U.S. will participate in this three-month trial program. During this time, Mercedes will evaluate how customers use the ChatGPT technology.
A Mercedes-Benz sales representative in California said: "Voice commands for the AI are given through the car, so you're talking directly to the car."
The integration of ChatGPT promises to take in-car virtual assistants to a new level. Instead of just responding to simple, pre-programmed commands like "increase the temperature" or "directions to point X," it can engage in natural-sounding conversations on almost any topic, including contextual questions. Beyond providing informational information, this mechanism will help improve driver comfort on long journeys.
Mercedes-Benz also stated that it is looking to expand the ChatGPT functionality, supporting additional utility tasks such as making restaurant reservations or booking movie tickets via natural language directly in its vehicles.
Regarding security, the German automaker asserts that the content of your conversations will be stored in its own intelligent cloud computing infrastructure and will be completely anonymous. However, this data will still be used for analysis and service improvement.
For its part, Microsoft has consistently asserted that its Azure OpenAI platform is highly secure and stable. The application of ChatGPT has given the American technology company Microsoft many advantages, as it provides a version of ChatGPT through Microsoft's cloud storage system. Meanwhile, Amazon.com – Microsoft's competitor – has long been researching ways to expand the use of its Alexa virtual assistant in more car models. This pilot program will help Mercedes implement plans to add ChatGPT to customers in more countries and in more languages. Voice data is stored, anonymized, and analyzed in Mercedes' cloud.
In March, Mercedes rival General Motors announced it was considering using ChatGPT in its vehicles as part of an expanded partnership with Microsoft.
