It is forecasted that December 2025 - January 2026 will be the peak of cold air affecting the weather in our country, especially in the Northern region. Notably, this year, strong cold air not only affects the North, but also covers the North Central region (Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Ha Tinh), causing rain in the provinces from Quang Binh to Quang Ngai.
From mid-December onwards, the North and North Central regions will experience severe cold spells. In mountainous areas, the sharp drop in temperature can lead to frost and frost, greatly affecting agricultural production and people's lives.
According to Mr. Lam, this winter, the North and North Central regions will have many cold and dry days, cold at night and sunny during the day. Cold and dry weather will be the common weather pattern from December 2025 until the end of January 2026.
Mr. Hoang Phuc Lam - Deputy Director of the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.
"In the dry cold state, water vapor condenses on the surface of leaves, surfaces easily form frost and hoarfrost when the temperature drops to approximately 0 degrees Celsius. In high mountainous areas, when the temperature drops deeply at night, the layer of frost and hoarfrost will be very thick," said Mr. Lam, "in the coming months, frost and hoarfrost will occur more frequently in the mountainous areas of the North and the mountainous areas of Thanh Hoa are likely to experience frost and hoarfrost this winter."
According to Mr. Luu Minh Hai, former Director of the Hydrometeorological Station of the old Lao Cai province, in previous years, frost and hoarfrost often appeared in the middle or near the end of winter when the cold air was strong and the frequency of occurrence was not much. However, this year, frost and hoarfrost continuously appeared right from the beginning of winter.
"According to my experience from 2008 until now, usually in years with many storms and floods, winter will be very cold and harsh," Mr. Hai commented.
In addition, Mr. Hoang Phuc Lam noted that from late February to early March 2026, the Northern region may experience many light rains, drizzle, and high humidity - typical of the humid weather at the end of winter.
In the Central Highlands and the South, unseasonal rains may occur in January-February 2026, while the Central region will continue to experience rain in late November and early December 2025.
The meteorological agency recommends that people proactively keep their bodies warm and protect their health against the upcoming cold spells; at the same time, closely monitor forecast information to promptly respond to extreme weather conditions.
