On July 15, Mr. Nguyen Cong Chung, Deputy Director of the Dak Lak Elephant Conservation, Wildlife Rescue and Forest Protection Center (Center) said that the unit had just received an elephant from a household in Lak district (Dak Lak province) for care and protection.
The elephant Y Mam was voluntarily handed over by its owner to the Dak Lak Elephant Conservation, Wildlife Rescue and Forest Protection Center for continued care and nurturing.
With the encouragement of the Center and Animals Asia, the owner of this elephant voluntarily handed it over to the Center to continue caring for, raising, improving the welfare, and prolonging the life of the elephant to serve the elephant conservation work.
Mr. Chung said that the newly adopted elephant named Y Mam, 50 years old, originated from a wild elephant. Previously, this elephant was captured and domesticated by people in Buon Don district (Dak Lak province).
After that, a household in Lak district bought elephant Y Mam to carry out tourism activities.
But elephant Y Mam is quite aggressive so the owner rarely lets him participate in tourist activities.
The 50-year-old elephant Y Mam will be cared for, raised, and have her welfare improved, serving elephant conservation work at the Dak Lak Elephant Conservation, Wildlife Rescue and Forest Protection Center.
The giant elephant Y Mam is often chained in the forest, affecting the elephant's welfare.
It is known that in Dak Lak province, Animals Asia has intervened in the welfare of 13 domesticated elephants, of which 8 elephants are participating in the tourism model at Yok Don National Park (Dak Lak province).
According to statistics, Dak Lak province currently has 35 domesticated elephants, including 18 female elephants and 17 male elephants. The herd of domesticated elephants is concentrated in Buon Don and Lak districts.
