Jose Mourinho sparked controversy when he admitted that managing Fenerbahce was a mistake and claimed that being the head coach of Benfica helped him return to his true level.

In an interview with A Bola on the occasion of his Benfica debut, Mourinho frankly shared: "I made a mistake when I went to Fenerbahce. That place was not the right environment for me, not suitable for my football level, not at my level."

"Of course, I gave everything for (Fenerbahce) until the last day, but leading Benfica helped me return to my level. My level is to coach one of the biggest clubs in the world . Benfica is that place," Mourinho emphasized.

Mourinho's statement quickly angered Fenerbahce fans and management. Many fans of the Turkish team thought the Portuguese coach was disrespectful to his former team.

A fan named Ali commented: "At Fenerbahce, Mourinho could not bring home any trophies during his time in Turkey. He is the club's mistake." According to Turkie Today, president Ali Koc and the Fenerbahce board of directors were also quite disappointed with Mourinho's statement.
