Due to the influence of the cold air, continuously from the night of May 9 to May 11, Lao Cai province experienced moderate to heavy rain, with thunderstorms in some places, causing many casualties and property losses. The most severely damaged localities were Van Ban, Bao Yen, Bat Xat and Muong Khuong districts.
The storm caused 35 houses to have their roofs blown off or landslides to enter (26 houses in Bao Yen district, 8 houses in Van Ban district and 1 house in Muong Khuong district), of which 9 houses had their roofs blown off from 70% to 100%. A number of schools, cultural houses, irrigation works, and rural roads in Bao Yen, Bat Xat, and Van Ban districts were damaged.
Specifically, the flood caused the cultural house and the welcome gate of Yen Son commune (Bao Yen) to have their roofs blown off and severely damaged; the propaganda billboard in the center of Luong Son commune collapsed; the irrigation project in Hom Duoi village, Nam Chay commune (Van Ban) had 15m of concrete canal collapsed; the traffic road project to Bat village, Yen Son commune (Bao Yen) had its positive slopes eroded at 4 points with a volume of over 2,000m3; the culvert across the road to Nam Chon village, Coc My commune was washed away, causing traffic disruption.
For agricultural production, floods and storms have caused more than 4 hectares of rice, crops, and 2 hectares of cinnamon trees... in Bao Yen, Van Ban, and Bat Xat districts to collapse; 1 buffalo (Vo Lao commune, Van Ban district) was struck dead by lightning. The total estimated damage is over 910 million VND.
Notably, at around 9:15 p.m. on May 10, Ms. Chao Su May, residing in Ky Cong Ho village, Tong Sanh commune, Bat Xat district, saw heavy rain and went to drain water in her family's rice field near her residence.
On the way, there was a landslide, causing Ms. May to be swept away about 200 meters. At 10 p.m. the same day, her family and people found her body in Ky Cong Ho village.
Immediately after the flood, the Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue of the districts directed specialized agencies and People's Committees of communes and towns to inspect and count the damage, and direct local forces to help households with human and housing losses, clean up, reinforce, re-roof houses, and clear fallen trees and debris on roads to ensure safety for travelers. Up to now, the damage recovery work has been basically completed, ensuring stable lives for people.
Currently, it is the time of changing seasons, extreme and unusual weather phenomena such as thunderstorms, hail, lightning, the risk of flash floods on small rivers and streams in mountainous areas; landslides on steep slopes, land subsidence in the areas of Bac Ha, Bao Thang, Bao Yen districts, Sa Pa town, Van Ban may occur; directly affecting people, property and crops.
To be proactive in preventing and responding to all situations that may be caused by natural disasters in order to minimize damage, the Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention of districts, towns and cities directs communes, wards and towns to strengthen the direction of people to tie, reinforce houses, and trim trees that are at risk of causing damage to houses, infrastructure works and traffic, in order to minimize damage caused by natural disasters.
Absolutely do not let people stay overnight in the fields, do not do outdoor activities when there are thunderstorms, hail, lightning, to minimize damage caused by thunderstorms and tornadoes./.
