Sources indicate that the Trump administration has quietly halted the processing of green card applications for certain individuals, including those already granted asylum in the United States.
Records from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS)
CBS News reported today, March 26 (Vietnam time), citing multiple informed sources, that the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) recently instructed officials to stop processing green card applications from two groups of refugees.
First, there are refugees who have been allowed to enter the United States after security, medical, and interview processes, which often take years to complete. They are people who left their home countries due to civil war, foreign conflict, or natural disasters.
Secondly, asylum seekers are foreign nationals currently in the United States who are applying for protection due to threats from their home country.
The Trump administration is taking action against both programs, which were enacted by Congress to delay the process of coming to the U.S. as refugees and to close the refugee system at the U.S.-Mexico border.
The Department of Homeland Security has confirmed the CBS News report, stating that green card processing has been halted due to the need to comply with two executive orders from President Trump. One of these orders questions the immigration vetting process implemented under his predecessor, Joe Biden.
The suspension of green card processing for certain individuals is the latest move by the Trump administration to restrict, tighten, and in some cases halt the legal immigration process based on national security concerns and fraud.
The Daily Beast also reported on March 24 that Washington may soon begin reviewing the social media accounts of permanent residents and naturalization applicants to check whether they have engaged in hostile behavior toward the U.S. or shown sympathy for terrorists.
In other news, President Trump signed an executive order on March 25th reforming the US election process, including requiring voters to prove their US citizenship to register to vote in federal elections and requiring all ballots to be mailed in by Election Day, according to AP.
The executive order warns that the federal government will stop providing funding to states whose election officials refuse to comply with Washington's new regulations.
