Despite entering the tournament as the reigning SEA Games and Asian champion, My Tam admitted she couldn't help but feel nervous. Sharing her thoughts after the final match, My Tam revealed: "Before SEA Games 33, I was very worried. The biggest challenge for me was that the competitors in the 61 kg category were very tall. However, the coaching staff and we had trained with the tall, strong male competitors to become more proficient and familiar with the sport."
