Singer Thanh Lan, whose real name is Pham Thai Thanh Lan, was born in 1948 in Vinh City, Nghe An Province . She showed artistic talent from a young age, beginning piano lessons at the age of nine under the guidance of the nuns at Saint Paul School, and later under the tutelage of composers Tham Oanh and Nghiem Phu Phi. While a student at Marie Curie High School, Thanh Lan participated in bands such as Viet Nhi, Hai Au, and the Nguon Song student performing arts group. Her career quickly flourished thanks to her sweet voice, natural acting ability, and striking appearance.

Despite her resounding career success, the renowned singer Thanh Lan experienced ups and downs in her personal life. Before turning 18, she met and married a prominent Saigon heir. The couple had a daughter, but the marriage lasted only about three years. Some sources claimed her husband was abusive and jealous, but she only stated that there was a lack of understanding between them. After her first marriage, Thanh Lan faced numerous rumors of romantic affairs.

In 1993, Thanh Lan emigrated to the United States and continued her singing career overseas. She also wrote a memoir about her life, which garnered public attention.
