Famous singer Thanh Lan, real name Pham Thai Thanh Lan, was born in 1948 in Vinh city, Nghe An . She showed her artistic talent early on, starting to learn piano at the age of 9 under the guidance of Saint Paul nuns, then being mentored by musicians Tham Oanh and Nghiem Phu Phi. While still a student at Marie Curie, Thanh Lan joined bands such as Viet Nhi, Hai Au and the Nguon Song student art troupe. Her career quickly blossomed thanks to her sweet voice, natural acting ability and outstanding appearance.

Before 1975, Thanh Lan was honored by the press and fans as the “queen” of music , cinema and stage. In particular, she made her mark in the Vietnamese youth music movement with songs with French lyrics.

Despite her resounding success in her career, singer Thanh Lan experienced ups and downs in her personal life. When she was not yet 18 years old, she met and married a famous young master in Saigon. The couple had a daughter together, but the marriage only lasted about three years. Some sources said that her husband was abusive and jealous, but she only said that there was a lack of understanding between the two. After her first marriage, Thanh Lan faced many love rumors.
