Former student majoring in Mathematics

Among more than 1,000 students of Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology recognized for graduation in the 4th batch of 2025, La Nguyen Gia Hy graduated 1 semester ahead of schedule, with an absolute GPA of 4.0/4.0. The male student also has an IELTS certificate of 8.0, achieved the title of 5-good student, excellent student in all aspects, and a graduation project score of 9.4.

Gia Hy was a student majoring in Mathematics at the Gifted High School and was admitted directly to Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology after winning second prize in the national excellent student exam in Mathematics.

Hy chose Artificial Intelligence (AI) because he was fascinated by the impressive possibilities of the field since he was a child, especially when he learned about systems that can play chess - like Google's AlphaGo defeating the world's top player in Go - which is considered one of the most complex challenges for computers.

In recent years, the emergence of generative AI models such as ChatGPT or Deepseek has made Hy even more curious and eager to learn more. In addition, school subjects such as machine learning and introductory AI help Hy access a systematic knowledge base, thereby further clarifying his passion and long-term orientation in this field.

During his studies at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, Hy participated in several research and engineering projects in the field of AI, such as the school's admissions consulting chatbot and an AI waste classification system.

Currently, Gia Hy is a member of the URA research group supervised by Associate Professor, Dr. Quan Thanh Tho. The group develops methods to improve the responsiveness and personalization of the university's admissions chatbot. In addition, Hy is participating in writing a scientific paper as the main author developed from his graduation project. The paper has been submitted to a Rank B international conference, is in the process of peer review and is expected to have results in mid-May.

3 experiences to graduate early, achieve excellent results

To achieve the above excellent results, according to Gia Hy, during his time studying at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, the male student had a clear study plan, making effective use of time to graduate early and maintain good results.

First, proactively study basic and specialized subjects in advance during the summer vacation to have more time to review for final exams and focus on major assignments.

Second, take the time to read the textbook carefully to understand the lesson comprehensively, instead of just learning through slides. Hy actively seeks out more materials from YouTube and takes exams from other schools to broaden his perspective.

Third, carefully study the academic regulations and build a suitable roadmap, in which the important requirement is to complete the major project before doing the graduation project. Hy did this project early in the second semester of the third year. Thanks to that, Hy had an easier final semester and took advantage of it to study and improve some subjects that did not achieve good results.

However, Gia Hy admitted that there were still some subjects that she did not get the best results from the first exam, such as Politics and Law, because she did not pay attention to reviewing the textbooks carefully, but mainly studied through videos and practiced previous years' questions. After learning from her experience, Gia Hy improved her studies and achieved an A.

The only subject Gia Hy only got 7.5 points for was Programming Language Principles - considered the most difficult subject in the Computer Science department.

Hy balances his studies with his research by reading books and listening to music, and actively learning English to relax. On weekends, he often plays sports to exercise and keep his spirit positive.

Gia Hy plans to pursue postgraduate programs specializing in AI in the next 2-3 years, while continuing to participate in projects applying AI to practical problems.

Associate Professor, Dr. Quan Thanh Tho - Head of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering said: "Hy is an excellent student, has a good knowledge base, high self-study ability and is always serious in studying and researching".

According to Associate Professor Dr. Quan Thanh Tho, during his time in his research group, Hy showed clear initiative and progress. The male student researched many specialized documents, grasped the problem quickly and was not afraid to propose new approaches. Mr. Tho highly appreciated Gia Hy's learning spirit, ability to work independently, and especially the serious and responsible attitude that he showed throughout his time working with the group.
