Livestock industry accelerates in the last months of the year

Báo Đồng NaiBáo Đồng Nai12/07/2023

Since the beginning of the year, the livestock industry has faced many difficulties due to high input costs and low prices of livestock products. However, in the first 6 months of 2023, the livestock industry still achieved good growth, although not as good as the same period last year. In particular, the livestock "capital" Dong Nai achieved growth rates among the top in the country.

From the second quarter of 2023, the livestock industry began to recover, and the price of livestock products has recovered to a level that makes farmers profitable. It is forecasted that in the last months of the year, the livestock industry will continue to achieve high growth thanks to the increasingly prosperous consumer market.

* More convenient in investment

Noting the fluctuations of the live pig market last week, the price of live pigs in the three regions continued to increase with an increase of 2-7 thousand VND/kg depending on the region. In which, the North has the highest price in the country with 66 thousand VND/kg. The Central and Central Highlands regions have prices from 58-63 thousand VND/kg. The South has prices from 59-63 thousand VND/kg. The prices of poultry products are also at a high level. Specifically, industrial chickens sold at farms are 30 thousand VND/kg; duck meat is from 51-53 thousand VND/kg, an increase of more than 10 thousand VND/kg compared to the previous month. With the above prices, pig and poultry farmers have made relatively good profits.

In addition to information about increased prices of livestock products, livestock farming activities are also more favorable when a series of domestic animal feed production companies simultaneously announced that from July 2023, animal feed prices will decrease by 80-400 VND/kg.

Mr. Pham Van Dao, owner of a pig farm in Vinh Tan commune (Vinh Cuu district), shared that the price of live pigs has increased to a level where farmers can make a profit and the price of animal feed has decreased, creating favorable conditions for production. Currently, farmers are expecting the market to improve at the end of the year to make up for the recent long period of losses.

At the livestock industry review conference organized by the Department of Livestock (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) on July 6, Director of the Department of Livestock Duong Tat Thang assessed that for a long time, the prices of livestock and poultry have decreased. However, from April 2023 to now, the livestock industry has had more positive changes, with livestock prices increasing again. This contributes to the livestock industry being able to achieve the growth target of the year.

At the conference to review the first 6 months of 2023 of the Agriculture sector, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development LE MINH HOAN pointed out that the solution to increase the competitiveness of the livestock industry is to master the technology of breeding, feed, processing... especially for pigs, poultry, and dairy cows. In addition, it is necessary to control diseases in livestock and poultry well, increase livestock herds, monitor the supply and demand of pork, and avoid price fluctuations.

* Find solutions to increase competitiveness

According to data from the General Statistics Office, the added value of the agricultural sector in the first 6 months of 2023 was 3.14% over the same period last year. The target of the livestock industry nationwide is to increase production value by 3.5-4% compared to 2022.

Compared to the whole country, Dong Nai's livestock industry is achieving a fairly good growth rate. Specifically, in the first 6 months of 2023, the livestock production value reached more than 14.4 trillion VND, an increase of nearly 4.8% over the same period last year. Livestock activities in the province have developed steadily, with a total herd of about 2.35 million pigs and about 25 million chickens.

However, according to the assessment of the Department of Animal Husbandry, in the coming time, the livestock industry will still face many difficulties and challenges such as: complicated developments of livestock diseases, with the potential risk of outbreaks; production costs, intermediate costs, and prices of domestic livestock products remain high. In particular, with the deep integration of our country with the world through 15 free trade agreements signed and in effect, the pressure on the market for domestic livestock products will increase. Competition is increasingly fierce in terms of price, quality, and product diversity in the context of livestock products from the US and Europe being exported to the Vietnamese market.

To increase the competitiveness of the livestock industry, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien requested the Department of Livestock to closely follow 5 priority projects to implement the Livestock Development Strategy for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2045, including: developing livestock breeding industry; developing animal feed processing industry; developing livestock barn and waste treatment industry; developing slaughtering, processing and livestock product markets and improving the quality of human resources; promoting science and technology activities, agricultural extension in livestock farming and strengthening the state management capacity of the livestock industry. These are projects that have been elaborately and scientifically developed, on the basis of the strategy, and are the "pillars" to implement the strategy on breeds, breeding industry, feed, environment, livestock equipment, processing, science and technology, and are also important legal bases, consistent over a long period of time.
