Over 80 years of formation and development, with the predecessor being the Department of Customs and Indirect Tax, the organizational model of the Customs sector has changed many times to suit each stage of the country's development, to better meet the increasingly high requirements of tasks.

Entering the renovation period since 1986, the role of Vietnam Customs has been continuously expanded and enhanced; marking important breakthroughs in many aspects, from institutional improvement, information technology modernization to investment in advanced technical equipment, in line with international practices and approaching the level of Customs of developed countries.
Director of the Customs Department Nguyen Van Tho said that with the spirit of strong reform and comprehensive innovation, the Customs sector has pioneered digital transformation, simplified procedures, facilitated trade, and accompanied the business community. The efforts of the Customs sector have contributed to turning Vietnam from a small agricultural economy into one of the 20 countries with the largest import and export turnover in the world.
For many consecutive years, the Customs sector has always excellently fulfilled its task of collecting state budget revenue, with revenue exceeding the assigned legal target, contributing nearly 1/4 of the total annual state budget revenue.
Not only is it a specialized force in import and export management, Vietnam Customs is also the front line in protecting national economic security and sovereignty , preventing and combating transnational crimes. The sector has taken the lead in detecting and handling hundreds of thousands of law violations, including many major projects, successfully destroying smuggling and illegal transportation of goods and drugs.

Over the past 80 years, many collectives and individuals in the Customs sector have been awarded noble prizes, including the Ho Chi Minh Medal, Independence Medal, Labor Medal, and First Class Military Exploit Medal.
At the ceremony, authorized by the President, Minister of Finance Nguyen Van Thang awarded the First Class Order of Military Exploit to the Customs Department.
Congratulating the Customs sector on its great and comprehensive results, the Minister requested the Customs sector to speed up the progress of building and perfecting laws, improving the effectiveness and efficiency of customs law enforcement, considering this a breakthrough and a driving force for development.
Along with that, it is urgent to complete the construction of digital customs and smart customs on the basis of applying science and technology, innovation, meeting the requirements of automatically processing all business stages, performing customs procedures anytime - anywhere - on any means.

"The Customs sector continues to proactively forecast, advise the Ministry and deploy appropriate solutions, ensuring the completion of state budget collection targets, contributing to the realization of the country's development goals," said Mr. Nguyen Van Thang.
From March 2025, implementing the policy of streamlining the apparatus, the General Department of Customs was reorganized into the Customs Department under the Ministry of Finance. The new structure includes three levels: Customs Department, Regional Customs Branch and Border Gate or Outside Border Gate Customs. After the reorganization, the whole industry reduced the number of focal points by more than half, equivalent to 53.77%.
