In particular, online learning solutions, AI applications and personalization based on capacity. In addition, connecting resources to support schools in disadvantaged areas, lacking teachers in teaching English.
Positive change
In the 2025 10th grade entrance exam, Vi Ngan Di (Mon Son Secondary School for Ethnic Minorities, Mon Son Commune, Nghe An ) scored 7.25 points in English. This was the subject she was most worried about because her academic performance was weaker than Math and Literature. With the official result being 2 points higher than the mid-year test in 9th grade, Vi Ngan Di was admitted to the Provincial Boarding High School for Ethnic Minorities. Not only this female student, the average English score of Mon Son Secondary School for Ethnic Minorities also rose to 6 points. This is a breakthrough result for the school in the border area, with the majority of ethnic minority children.
Ms. Lo Thi Yen Phuong - English teacher, Mon Son Secondary School for Ethnic Minorities said that the biggest difficulty in teaching English in highland schools in general is that students do not have a previous foundation. In primary school, most of the students are just getting acquainted with this subject but the general quality is low, lacking grammar knowledge, and extremely limited vocabulary.
The class of 9th grade students who have just graduated is the first group following the 2018 General Education Program, so she is concerned about improving the quality of English teaching. During the teaching process, Ms. Yen Phuong focuses on equipping students with basic grammar and increasing their vocabulary. Class time is not enough, so she looks for more documents, suitable dialogues, and gives more homework for students to practice.
At the same time, Zalo and Facebook groups were set up to share electronic learning materials with students. Thanks to that, this border school had a successful exam season, in which the English results were among the top schools in the mountainous area of Nghe An province.
Tam Quang 2 Primary Boarding School (Tam Quang Commune, Nghe An) has 303 students, studying at 2 locations in So and Tung Huong. Because there is only 1 English teacher, the school can only ensure to teach enough compulsory lessons for grades 3, 4, and 5. For students in grades 1 and 2, learning to get acquainted with English early is what parents and students want, but it is impossible for the school.
However, from the 2024-2025 school year, with the "school helping school, subject helping subject" movement launched by the Nghe An Department of Education , teachers from lowland schools supporting free online English teaching for mountainous schools have solved this problem.
Ms. Ho Thi Huyen Trang - teacher at Dang Son Primary School (Do Luong Commune, Nghe An) teaches 2 online English lessons per week to students of Tam Quang 2 Primary Boarding School.
She shared: “Although there are many difficulties and the effectiveness is difficult to achieve as in direct teaching, the goal of teachers and schools is to familiarize first and second graders with English, to create interest and love for learning and studying for them. Then, when they reach third grade, they will have a certain foundation to start studying the 2018 General Education Program.”
Because learning is conducted via Zoom, administrators and teachers in highland schools will act as teaching assistants, preparing computers and transmission lines for online English lessons. According to the principals of highland schools in Nghe An, online coordination and connection in English teaching is an inheritance and effective promotion of the application of information technology in teaching, flexibly suitable to the practical conditions of each school and subject.
For English, this solution temporarily compensates for the shortage of teachers while waiting for recruitment, and on the other hand contributes to improving the effectiveness of teaching this subject in remote and difficult areas.

Strengthening English in schools
Hung Binh Secondary School (Thanh Vinh Ward, Nghe An) is enrolling 8 sixth graders this year, including 2 intensive English classes and 1 STEM class. According to the school leaders, although the quota for the intensive classes is only 92 students, the number of applications is large.
Previously, according to the admission announcement, to enter the intensive English class, students need to have one of the international English certificates such as: Mover, Flyer, KET, have high test scores at the end of grade 5 or have certificates of merit, exchange certificates organized by the Department of Education.
Ms. Le Thu Yen - Principal of Hung Binh Secondary School, said: Learning English is a current trend and many parents want to invest in their children to improve their English skills.
According to a report by the Nghe An Department of Education and Training, by the end of the 2024-2025 school year, the province will have 35 foreign language centers that have been assessed to participate in teaching enhanced English at educational institutions with more than 2,500 classes and nearly 68,000 students participating.
Mr. Nguyen Manh Ha - Head of the Department of Vocational Education and Continuing Education, Nghe An Department of Education and Training said that the enhanced English teaching program is gradually becoming more systematic and systematic. Currently, in the admission of students at the beginning of the school year, universities, colleges... many schools add priority points based on the results of international foreign language proficiency certificates. This is also a motivation for students to be proactive and positive in learning English.
In recent years, the Nghe An Education sector has actively implemented the Project "Improving the quality of foreign language teaching and learning in educational institutions in the area, period 2021 - 2025, orientation to 2030". Many specific models and solutions have been implemented, bringing about remarkable results.
However, in reality, English teaching in schools still faces many difficulties. Currently, 100% of high schools in the province have taught English according to the new program, but the quality is not uniform. There is a shortage of teachers, the rate of meeting foreign language proficiency standards according to the requirements of the General Education Program is not high. The facilities are lacking and not synchronized with 117 schools not having foreign language classrooms.
Implementing the "National Foreign Language Project", the Department of Education and Training also advised the People's Committee of Nghe An province on the "Project to Improve Foreign Language Capacity, Making English the Second Language in Schools, 2025 - 2035 period".
“With many requirements in the new period, Nghe An Education sector deploys models, technological solutions and internationalizes English learning. In particular, online learning solutions, AI applications and personalization according to capacity.
To do so, the Department of Education and Training continues to advise Nghe An province on specific mechanisms and policies to improve the quality of the teaching staff, invest in facilities and teaching equipment for schools, and help students access a better English learning environment." - Mr. Thai Van Thanh - Director of the Department of Education and Training of Nghe An
