Young artist Dang Gia Thinh "brings bells to strike foreign lands" in Italy
Orbetello - the venue of the international piano competition is a beautiful seaside city in Italy, a tourist city where European visitors come to avoid the cold in winter, with a dock for thousands of luxury sailboats.
Since 2017, the first Orbetello International Piano Competition has been held here, sponsored by the city of Orbetello and the Kaletra association. The competition attracts many contestants from all over the world : Italy, Estonia, Ukraine, Germany, Poland, Mongolia, Spain, Portugal, Latvia, Bulgaria, Turkey, China, Japan, Korea, Sweden, Hungary, England, America, Australia …
The 2023 competition is the 7th Orbetello competition. There are two versions for young talents (Junior Competition): The online version receives entries by email from April 1 to April 20, 2023 and the live version in the city of Orbetello from April 27 to April 30, 2023. The two competitions are judged by two different Juries, who are famous pianists and professors from many countries.
It is known that Dang Gia Thinh started learning piano at the end of 4th grade, when he was only 9 years old, compared to his friends, he started learning piano a bit late. However, Thinh was really passionate about piano, spending almost all of his holidays and summers practicing piano. From many sources of information about the 7th Orbetello competition from relatives, Thinh decided to go to Italy to try his hand.

From many sources of information about the 7th Orbetello competition obtained from relatives, the young artist decided to go to Italy to test himself.
Dang Gia Thinh said: "There are many memories that I will remember after this trip. The most memorable thing is that the contestants were very interested when they knew I was from Vietnam because up to now, they often met Japanese, Korean, and Chinese contestants from Asia. On the first day in Italy, when I was guided up and down the floors, I was very surprised because I always heard the pronunciation "piano", I thought that every building in Italy had a piano class, later I learned that in Italian "piano" means floor, floor... of a building. The most exciting thing was the first day from Rome to the city of Orbetello, I got on the wrong train and had to ask to get off in the middle of the road, there were no taxis, no technology cars, and people did not know much English so I had to use Google Translate to ask for directions. Finally, an Italian couple used a car to take my father and I back to the hotel, even though I only asked them to take me to the nearest bus stop".
Evaluating the competitors, Dang Gia Thinh pondered: "You guys come from Estonia, Mongolia, Spain, Latvia, Bulgaria, Turkey, Poland, Sweden, Hungary, England, Belarus, Lithuania... all competed very professionally and had very solid stage presence. When coming to the Orbetello competition, most of you had won many gold medals in other international competitions. According to my research, you all learned piano from a young age, right when you were learning to read and write, when you were only 4 - 5 - 6 years old, and were oriented to formal training. You guys are all sociable and cheerful when interacting."
At the age of 16, Dang Gia Thinh participated in group C of the Orbetello piano competition in 2023. On the night of April 29, after performing in the final round at the Orbetello stage, Dang Gia Thinh achieved 91 out of 100 points, with this result, Thinh was awarded a second prize certificate. In the online competition (group E, for the age group 15-16) announced earlier, Dang Gia Thinh's entry was scored 97/100 points by the jury and was awarded a first prize certificate...
Talking about his achievements at the Orbetello International Piano Competition, Dang Gia Thinh confided: "Participating in international competitions is, in my opinion, very necessary for any piano student who wants to go further. Interacting with other contestants and watching their performances is truly a valuable and necessary experience. The evaluations of the Jury, who are world-famous pianists from many different music training environments, have helped me better recognize my strengths and weaknesses and recognize the diversity in piano training perspectives of Western countries, which may be different from my own country."

Continuing to conquer new heights in the future is the desire and aspiration of young artist Dang Gia Thinh. "Through the competition, I have more confidence in myself. I think that in Vietnam there are many talented people, if properly trained, they all have the ability to win awards in international competitions. I hope that in the future there will be many opportunities to participate in other international competitions, to continue to rub shoulders and test myself," Dang Gia Thinh affirmed.
In Vietnam, during his studies, Dang Gia Thinh won many awards: First prize in the C category of light music piano at the Central Talent Competition (2020), second prize (no first prize) in the C category of classical piano at the Central Talent Competition (2021); Gold medal at the Rising Star International Arts Festival & Competition in Hanoi in 2020. Recently, Thinh and other young music lovers in the Saigon Classical Music Group have been highly appreciated by audiences and experts through their performances with their friends.
In 2020, Dang Gia Thinh passed the 7-year Intermediate Light Music Piano class of Ho Chi Minh City Conservatory of Music with the highest score. After studying for 2 months, he transferred to the Classical Piano department, because at that time, through research, Thinh found that he was more passionate and suitable for classical piano. In the August 2021 exam, Dang Gia Thinh achieved the second highest score in the entrance exam for the 4-year Intermediate Classical Piano course, and has been studying since then under the guidance of Master Nguyen Lu Hiep.
In 2022, Thinh again surpassed many candidates to become the only member trained in piano at the GATE Talent Center, under the guidance of pianist Nguyen Duc Anh. Artist Nguyen Duc Anh, who studied at the Freiburg Conservatory (Germany), won second prize (no first prize) at the Alkan-Zimmerman International Piano Competition in Athens, Greece (2014).
