Culturally deviant artists: Restricted from performing, not allowed to appear on television?

Mr. Vuong Duy Bien, former Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, once said that not only should performances be limited, but also artists with cultural deviations should not be allowed to appear on television.

Responding to Tuoi Tre Online, Mr. Vuong Duy Bien - former Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, now Chairman of the Vietnam Association for Cultural Industry Development - supported the need to orient and rectify musical activities that show signs of cultural deviation.

Because artists have a great influence, in addition to their existing brands, they also have a large fan base. If they convey good messages, it is beneficial to society, but if they convey bad messages, the negative influence will spread.

Breaking the mold is not a cognitive distortion.

Performances often attract a large number of young people. If they are negatively affected by messages that promote vices, it is youth poisoning, such as drug use.

"When I worked at the Department of Performing Arts or the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, I made many statements, not only limiting performances but also not allowing them to appear on television. Both on television and in performances, the message is still very broad.

"Art always has the function of truth, goodness and beauty. Artists in any form must create on that basis to spread good things to society," said Mr. Vuong Duy Bien.

According to him, if someone considers lyrics that promote social evils and loose lifestyles as expressing "rebellion and freedom" in young people, then that is a deviation in perception. He agrees that young people are rebellious and free, but they also need to be creative based on good and benevolent things.

Mr. Vuong Duy Bien gave the example of musician - singer Nguyen Hung, also a young person, whose compositions touched millions of hearts, typically the song "What's more beautiful" inspired by the movie Red Rain.

He analyzed: "He is also a young artist, creating very artistic songs that are not political at all. Because art, after all, must touch people's emotions and move the hearts of the public. Artists should continue to create but do not use unusual things in life to attract audiences."

'Banning' artists with deviant behavior, needs to be clear

In Tuoi Tre Online articles, readers continue to speak out about the above issue, creating a lively, multi-dimensional forum.

Reader Ngan spoke up under the article "We need to ban singers who 'have cultural deviations' from the airwaves": "It needs to be done correctly, but it also needs to be clear. Clear banning time. Clear banning programs. It's both a deterrent and gives an opportunity to correct mistakes. There needs to be clarity so as not to circumvent the law."

Reader Toan Nguyen suggested: "There needs to be a legal corridor with specific and clear regulations to handle each level of deviant behavior and reckless view-baiting. We do this not to prohibit anyone but to protect society from deviant content.

Because even artists, YouTubers, and TikTokers cannot control who will see the content they post. If unfortunately, dirty, deviant content will spread to children and minors... Strict control must be exercised from the beginning!".

Reader Anh Thu Nguyen noted that the quality of the lyrical message also comes from personality: "It's not just the lyrics, but also the personality. People who influence the masses have a high responsibility for propaganda and must not have a deviant lifestyle."

Some readers expressed strong opinions: "Any singer who "deviates from cultural standards" should be banned from broadcasting, even banned from performing to avoid affecting people's lifestyles, especially students"; or "Radio stations should not let singers with dyed hair, red hair, or tattoos perform on the radio."

But there are also opinions that oppose this view, saying that we should not ban images too strictly if they are not too offensive.

"Their hair dye or tattoos don't mean anything. Don't impose the lifestyle of the elderly on the young... However, cultural agencies must have strict sanctions for wrongdoing. All content posted on social networks should be linked to specifically identified accounts" - a reader commented.
