Great job opportunities
Oil and gas are known as the world's "black gold." Oil and gas extraction has become a key economic sector for many countries, including Vietnam. Therefore, human resources in this field are increasingly sought after by businesses and corporations.
Speaking with a reporter from Lao Dong Newspaper, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Viet Ha - Head of the Public Relations and Enterprise Department, Hanoi University of Mining and Geology, assessed that the oil and gas industry is currently experiencing a "shortage of human resources".
“Contrary to the demand for labor, the oil and gas industry and related fields such as mining and geology are not attracting many applicants. The university continuously receives job orders from businesses, but the number of graduating students is insufficient to meet the demand,” said Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Viet Ha.
Explaining the labor shortage, Ms. Nguyen Kim Chung, Deputy Head of the Corporate Public Relations Department at the Hanoi University of Mining and Geology, suggested that candidates do not yet fully understand this training program.
"Currently, popular majors and universities have high enrollment rates and intense competition. However, these fields may soon become saturated in the future due to supply exceeding demand."
Meanwhile, oil and gas in particular, and engineering fields at the University of Mining and Geology in general, are highly specialized and essential to society. Job opportunities for graduates in these majors are much broader,” shared Master's student Nguyen Kim Chung.
A dream income
Regarding the income of petroleum engineers, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Viet Ha stated: “Graduates in petroleum engineering can work in specialized research institutes or directly on offshore oil and gas platforms with highly modern automated machinery systems. The starting salaries offered by businesses to graduates are relatively high, from 20 million VND per month or more.”
After researching and seeking advice on this matter, Nguyen Duc Huy, a fourth-year student in the Faculty of Petroleum and Energy at the Hanoi University of Mining and Geology, stated that salary depends on each individual's capabilities.
"Technical personnel in the oil and gas industry are considered 'high-paying engineers.' However, salary levels depend heavily on professional competence, strong foreign language skills, and problem-solving abilities. Furthermore, salaries in the oil and gas industry increase rapidly with position and seniority," said Duc Huy.
According to the male student, he chose to study Petroleum Engineering because of the high demand for labor, good compensation, and opportunities for students to work both domestically and internationally. However, to have these broad opportunities, students need a wealth of knowledge and experience.
"The Petroleum Engineering field is largely taught in English, so strong foreign language skills are a major advantage. Furthermore, during your studies, you should prioritize self-study, independent research, and setting short-term and long-term learning goals. Achieving these goals means you've accumulated valuable knowledge and experience," Duc Huy advised.
