At the press conference introducing the 7th Hanoi International Film Festival 2024 on November 5th, Mr. Vi Kien Thanh, Director of the Vietnam Film Department, addressed the information regarding the participation of director Zhang Yimou, Lee Kwang Soo, and many other internationally renowned figures in the festival.
Mr. Vi Kien Thanh, Director of the Department of Cinema, spoke about the international stars participating in the Hanoi International Film Festival 2024.
Mr. Vi Kien Thanh, Director of the Department of Cinema, affirmed: " This information is inaccurate. Although inviting big stars of world cinema to the event has always been a priority for the Organizing Committee and a goal from the beginning, this has encountered many difficulties."
The Director of the Vietnam Film Department explained two reasons why international stars find it difficult to attend the Hanoi International Film Festival. Mr. Vi Kien Thanh said: " The festival is usually held in November or December, which is when directors, producers, and artists are working on new film projects. There are stars who are willing to come to Vietnam to attend the festival, but due to commitments to their film projects, they cannot miss them."
The head of the Film Department said they will review and study the matter before reporting to the leaders of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to choose a more suitable time to hold the film festival. Perhaps May-June each year would be more appropriate to allow international stars to come to Vietnam.
Mr. Vi Kien Thanh stated that movie stars often have specific requirements, such as staying in 5-star hotels and purchasing luxury airline tickets. Furthermore, international stars usually have 3 to 5 accompanying staff members, and it would be very difficult if they also used luxury tickets and stayed in 5-star hotels.
"During the invitation process, movie stars often have additional requirements, for example, staying in 5-star hotels or purchasing luxury airline tickets. We can meet these. But the third requirement that makes it difficult for us is that they must have 3-5 assistants accompanying them. If these accompanying people also use luxury tickets, it's very difficult to handle for a film festival that uses state budget. We always hope to invite international stars, but we are currently facing difficulties with the budget," Mr. Thanh said.
This year, the organizers invited approximately 800 delegates, including domestic and international guests, to attend the event. Among them were Mr. Kim Dong Ho, founder and former chairman of the Busan International Film Festival; and Mr. Philip Cheah, program advisor for numerous international and Asian film festivals, including the Shanghai International Film Festival and the Dubai International Film Festival.
Mr. Ta Quang Dong, Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism and Head of the Film Festival Steering Committee, spoke at the press conference.
Also at the press conference, Mr. Ta Quang Dong - Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Head of the Film Festival Steering Committee - said that from more than 500 films registered to participate, the Film Festival selected 117 feature films and short films from 51 countries and territories to be screened in the festival's film programs. These films, with their diverse styles and unique, creative presentations, promise to create a vibrant, lively, and culturally rich film festival.
Regarding the exclusion of high-grossing films from the competition, Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Ta Quang Dong, Head of the Film Festival Steering Committee, said: “In terms of criteria, art is difficult to define as precisely as mathematics to answer the questions of why and how. With art, what matters is the emotion the film evokes in the viewer, the lasting ideas, and the philosophy of life. These are the top criteria for us to select films for the competition.”
Mr. Vi Kien Thanh added that films such as "Lat Mat," "Mai, Dao, Pho and Piano," "Doa Hoa Mong Manh," "Gap Lai Chi Bau," "Nha Ba Nu," etc., will be screened in various programs within the framework of the Film Festival.
"We want to present a comprehensive overview to show how Vietnamese cinema has developed over the past two years," said Mr. Vi Kien Thanh.
