Ms. Ly Thu Huyen, President of the Minh Xuan Ward Women's Union, said: "The whole ward has 9,290 women members, participating in 104 residential group branches. Previously, people often had the habit of dumping waste, especially single-use plastic waste in gardens, alleys of residential groups, throwing bottles, jars, and pesticide packaging into the fields... This practice has led to environmental pollution and loss of the residential group landscape. Responding to the movement to prevent and combat plastic waste launched by the Central Committee of the Vietnam Women's Union, since March 2022, the ward Women's Union has deployed the "Green House" model. The model was built with the purpose of collecting recyclable waste to raise funds to help members, women, and children in poor and disadvantaged circumstances.
Every quarter at the Y La 3 residential group's cultural house, women's association members gather at the "Green House" to collect plastic waste. The piles of cans and cardboard boxes are so high that we can see the spirit of support from the members in the group. While counting the cans, Ms. Vi Thi Kim Thuy, Head of the Women's Association of the residential group, excitedly said: "The money from selling scrap is used to raise funds for activities and support for members' families in difficult circumstances, support people affected by natural disasters, and to encourage children of members with high academic achievements...
Since implementing the model, the Women's Union has collected 3,384 kg of plastic waste, sold for nearly 10 million VND. With this amount, the Union has supported 10 cases, given 60 kg of rice to members in difficult circumstances, and given trash bins to people.
Many families in the ward actively contribute scrap materials in the hope of contributing a small effort to help those in difficult circumstances. Ms. Le Nhat Minh, Trung Mon 2 residential group, emotionally shared: “I myself have a serious illness and am in difficult circumstances. The sisters in the residential group have helped my family a lot, regularly visiting, giving gifts and supporting cash. I am very touched, this is a great source of motivation to help me be more steadfast in fighting the disease and moving forward in life.”
Currently, the Association has built 4 “Green House” models, collected 22 tons of plastic waste, sold nearly 350 million VND to supplement the association’s operating fund. From this source of scrap sales, it has supported the construction of 10 toilets for members in difficult circumstances; bought 1,000 trash cans to place on the roads…
