For the past 3 years, the name Puripol Boonson has been no longer strange to the world of athletics. He is the pride of the Thai people when he steps into the race of the fastest runners on the planet.
At the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games, Boonson, then 17, made a strong impression with a silver medal in the 100m race. At the 2025 Asian Championships, Boonson also finished second in the speedway.
Boonson had won a wild card for the best young athlete to be able to attend the 2022 World Championships. But the Thai Athletics Federation that year decided to "keep" its young star, so that he could develop step by step.
And finally, Boonson also appeared at the World Athletics Championships this year. Because of his good results, Boonson was ranked in group 4 in the second qualifying round, which included many strong athletes such as Jerome Blake, Kenneth Bednarek.
The Thai runner finished in 10.15 seconds. This is far from his career best of 10.02 seconds, but is also his best time in 2025.
Only finishing 4th in his race, Boonson ended up 18th out of 56 athletes participating in the second qualifying round. Because the semi-finals took 24 athletes, the Thai runner won the ticket to continue.
The qualifying results show that the fastest runner was South African Leotlela, with a time of 9.87 seconds. The 8th place finisher was Simbine (also South African) with a time of 10.02 seconds.
If he can perform at his best in the semi-finals, Boonson could make it to the final, marking a special milestone for Southeast Asian athletics as he joins the group of fastest runners on the planet.
The semi-finals are scheduled to take place at 6:45 p.m. on September 14 (Vietnam time), and the final at 8:20 p.m.
