This is the fifth year that Mr. Nguyen Van Tinh has developed a model of growing cut roses in Sin Chai village, Ngu Chi Son commune. Previously, Mr. Tinh had grown cut flowers in many other localities such as Phu Tho and Lai Chau , but he said that Ngu Chi Son is a locality with many favorable conditions, especially the land and climate, which are very suitable for developing a model of growing cut roses.

With 3 hectares, Mr. Tinh harvests 2-3 batches of roses each month, each batch has about 100,000 branches/flowers. Mr. Tinh said that although this year's weather has been rainy and quite unfavorable, causing many roses to be damaged and the flowers to be smaller than in previous years, it is still one of the crops with higher economic value than traditional crops in the area.

Currently, the selling price of roses in the garden ranges from 1,500 - 2,000 VND/branch. Therefore, each month from 3 hectares of cut roses, Mr. Tinh still earns about 300 - 400 million VND.

“Seeing that growing roses in Ngu Chi Son is convenient and effective, I invited many friends and relatives with experience to come here to rent land to grow roses. Up to now, there are more than a dozen households participating in growing this type of tree, gradually forming a cut flower growing area with high economic value, at the same time creating jobs for many local workers,” Mr. Tinh added.

Not far from Mr. Tinh's rose garden, Ms. Pham Thi Toan is also busy harvesting and sorting roses to ship to dealers. According to Ms. Toan, growing roses in Ngu Chi Son is very convenient and can be harvested year-round. Thanks to the good weather, the flowers here also require less use of pesticides than in other localities. "The flowers grown here have large, thick flowers with many petals, so they are favored by markets inside and outside the province. Currently, our roses are mainly shipped downstream to supply the markets in Hanoi , Phu Tho and a small part is sold in the provincial market," Ms. Toan added.

Like Mr. Tinh and Ms. Toan's families, in recent years, many farmers in Ngu Chi Son commune have focused on investing and expanding the area of cut flower cultivation. According to statistics from the People's Committee of Ngu Chi Son commune, the whole commune currently has about 60 hectares of cut flowers, with an average output of 4.4 million flowers/branch/year. Of which, the area is mainly roses and a small part is lilies and chrysanthemums.

“The area of cut flower cultivation in the locality has been increasing rapidly in the past 2 years, opening up a new direction for the local agricultural sector. With the economic efficiency brought about, we are encouraging farmers to continue investing and expanding the area to increase the output of commercial flowers, contributing to increasing the value of agricultural production, increasing income and creating jobs for local workers.”

Mr. Tran Manh Hung - Chairman of Ngu Chi Son Commune People's Committee.

Expanding the area of cut flower cultivation is a suitable direction for Ngu Chi Son commune to promote the potential and advantages of climate and soil to increase the value of agricultural production, contribute to sustainable poverty reduction and increase income for people, promote rural agriculture in the area to develop more and more.
