Fishermen hit it big in the spawning season of herring schools

This season, large schools of herring come ashore to lay eggs, so coastal fishermen in Thach Lac commune (Ha Tinh city) can earn millions, even tens of millions, after just a few hours of sailing out to sea on each trip.

Resting his hands on the big catch of fish he had just caught this morning, Mr. Nguyen Duc Nho (52 years old, living in Bac Lac village, Thach Lac commune, Ha Tinh city) excitedly said that after 4 hours at sea, his boat caught a big catch of herring, estimated to weigh up to 1 ton.

Mr. Nho said that this season, there are a lot of herring coming ashore, so for nearly a month now, every 5 hours, he and his wife take the 24CV boat to the local sea about 3-5 nautical miles from shore to catch fish.

“In the past few days, my wife and I have caught an average of 700-800 kg of fish on each trip out to sea. With the price of herring ranging from 10,000 - 11,000 VND/kg, my wife and I earn about 6 million VND per day after deducting expenses. Today alone, my wife and I earned 10 million VND,” Mr. Nho confided.

Next to that, Mr. Nguyen Duc Luong (42 years old, living in Bac Lac village, Thach Lac commune, Ha Tinh city) and his wife, along with 3 villagers, were also hurriedly pulling a batch of herring weighing about 300 kg from the net.

Mr. Luong said that this March he and his wife have only gone out to sea 15 times, each trip can last 1 hour or 3-4 hours depending on when they catch the fish.

“This season, the herring yield is so large that most of the boats that go out to sea have a big catch. Some boats catch over 1 ton after a trip, some catch 600-700 kg. For example, my family's boat caught 700 kg of fish yesterday, bringing in an income of 7 million VND. Today's catch is smaller, so it only brings in an income of 3 million VND/day,” Mr. Luong added.
